SABIC announces planned development of world’s first Oil-to-Chemicals complex at Innovation Day event


4124Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Thenayan Al-Saud, Chairman of SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, announced in Riyadh today that SABIC is in the last stages of preliminary studies for the construction of the world’s first Oil-to-Chemicals (OTC) complex in Saudi Arabia.

Prince Saud made this announcement as he inaugurated the SABIC Innovation Day. He said that the Innovation Day is a showcase of SABIC’s technological achievements around the world. “Saudi Arabia is on a journey to grow, diversify itself, reduce its energy intensity and move towards a knowledge economy. To this end, it requires the commitment and effective execution of all its engines. Today we will demonstrate how SABIC is well on the way to transforming itself into a solutions provider to its destination markets and delivering value to its customers via technology. All of this means innovation, which is commercialized invention.”

Mohamed Al-Mady, SABIC Vice Chairman and CEO, welcomed key external stakeholders, including government officials, key SABIC customers, businessmen, academicians, research partners, and media representatives. Notable speakers included: Professor Vijay Govindarajan, Coxe Distinguished Professor at Tuck at Dartmouth; Professor Jean-Lou Chameau, President of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST); and Dr. Mohammad Al-Suwaiyel, President, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST).

In his keynote address, Al-Mady said, “SABIC is today seeing the rewards of innovation leadership and driving the technology agenda in key areas of our business. The OTC complex will set a new competitive standard and establish Saudi Arabia as a technology leader in the petrochemical industry. OTC technology allows for the conversion of crude oil to petrochemical products at the highest ever achieved conversion rate in a competitive and sustainable way.”

The OTC complex will comprise an innovative configuration of unit operations that, in combination, will generate the world’s highest yield conversion of oil to chemicals. SABIC expects to utilize around 10 million metric tons of crude oil at the complex to produce petrochemicals, and eventually advanced specialty chemicals in line with SABIC’s 2025 strategy.

The complex is expected to start up by the end of the current decade and will provide an aggregated total of around 100,000 new jobs, according to current company projections. The project comes at a time when the company is focussing strongly on research and innovation to produce new materials to face global market challenges.

To help spur innovation globally, Al-Mady announced an annual Innovation Award to entrepreneurs. SABIC is offering cash awards of up to SR 10 million along with research and commercial support for innovative ideas or existing inventions in the field of smart polymers. Applications will be accepted electronically through the SABIC website from June 1, 2014.

“Every year SABIC screens more than 250 start-ups for possible partnership,” said Al-Mady. “We hope the SABIC Innovation Award will encourage many more worthy projects.”

“SABIC’s innovation engine is firing on all cylinders,” he told the attendees. “Innovation is key to the future not only of SABIC but more broadly for our country. Innovation can make Saudi Arabia a knowledge economy and a more energy efficient environment. But it takes the continued efforts of government, academia and business to generate an ecosystem for growth. We are and will continue to be part of those efforts.”

Also speaking on the occasion, Ernesto Occhiello, SABIC Executive Vice President, Technology and Innovation, said that SABIC recently filed for its 10,000th patent, a landmark number that establishes the company as the largest patent developer in the Middle East. On average, SABIC files a new patent every 18 hours, each based on the work of approximately four researchers. This represents greater efficiency than any other top ten companies in the chemical industry, he said.

“Intellectual property is an important tool to help SABIC achieve its 2025 strategy,” he said. “Our patent estate is one of several indicators we use to measure our return on investment in research and development. Our 10,400 global patent dockets are a reflection of our emphasis on innovation to support our growth.”

Bourn Hall was the first clinic in the world to successfully have an IVF baby and Professor Robert Edwards, co-founder of Bourn Hall Clinic UK, received a Nobel Prize for Medicine for his achievements in December 2010. Bourn Hall, in its bid to increase awareness about and prevent genetically transmitted diseases has teamed up with UAEGDA. Bourn Hall will provide a 20% discount to patients from UAEGDA for IVF treatment. So a procedure that would usually cost AED37,000 will only cost AED29,600 to UAEGDA - referred patient. The preliminary checkup meanwhile, will cost AED15,000 instead of AED20,000.

Furthermore, every year Bourn Hall will provide 5 free IVFs to 5 needy couples with financial constraints and referred by UAEGDA. Bourn Hall will also sponsor the first winner/ doctor from the 5th annual UAEGDA conference, due to be held by the end of September, 2014 to be sent to Bourn Hall UK for further training and development for two weeks.

MetCap Announces Expansion of the World’s First Integrated Renewables Combined-Cycle Plant Powered by GE Technology


2328ISTANBUL, TURKEY: GE (NYSE: GE) and Turkish energy company MetCap Energy Investments have announced their investment in one of Europe’s most efficient, natural gas-fired power plants. Featuring GE technology, the 878-megawatt Eurostar project will help to power Istanbul, supporting Turkey’s efforts to modernize its aging energy infrastructure and meet its growing electricity requirements.

At an event, attended by Turkish energy ministry officials in Istanbul, GE and MetCap also announced approval from the Turkish government to nearly double the output of the world’s first Integrated Renewables Combined-Cycle (IRCC) plant. The initial phase of the Dervish IRCC plant in Karaman, Turkey, was announced in June and is based on GE’s breakthrough FlexEfficiency* 50 combined-cycle technology. The license extension allows energy output to be increased from 570 megawatts to 1,080 megawatts. The Dervish license extension also paves the way for a second plant using GE’s FlexEfficiency* technology and eSolar’s concentrated solar power technologies.

The MetCap and GE alliance sets a new global standard for the efficient integration of natural gas and renewable energy. The landmark Dervish project will enable the Turkish power grid to use more wind, solar and natural gas, helping to meet a growing demand for cleaner, affordable and reliable power generation.

“Projects such as Eurostar and Dervish will help to light up Istanbul and Turkey,” said Dr. Celal Metin, chairman of MetCap Energy Investments. “They are further evidence that the MetCap-GE alliance can create growth opportunities to deliver leading technology to Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and elsewhere in the world. Project Eurostar

When completed, the Eurostar power plant, consisting of two Frame 9FB Gas Turbines, one steam turbine and one heat recovery steam generator, will produce enough power to equal the energy use of 2.3 million Istanbul households. In addition to more than 58 percent thermal efficiency, the Eurostar project will feature zero-liquid discharge, lower emissions and a rapid-response, 35-minute start capability. The plant will be located in Kirklareli, near Istanbul. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) will be provided by the GE-Gama consortium. The power plant is scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2014. With this project, MetCap and GE Energy technologies will help meet Istanbul’s increasing demand for power.

“Turkey needs a diversified and sustainable energy resource portfolio due to the country’s growing economic needs and energy demands that cannot be met with a single fuel or technology,” said Ricardo Cordoba, Regional President of GE Energy. “Without investment in new power plants, Turkey could face a serious energy shortage. Highly efficient natural gas fired combined-cycle power plants like Eurostar will be a critical part of the country’s electricity supply.”

Project Dervish IRCC

The initial phase of the IRCC project was announced at the POWER-GEN Europe conference in June. The project features GE’s FlexEfficiency* technology, which offers the operating flexibility to integrate natural gas, wind and solar power into a single energy complex.

The Dervish plant proposed expansion would enter commercial operation in 2016, and once fully expanded per the new larger license, would provide enough electricity for more than 1.2 million Turkish households.

GE’s FlexEfficiency* IRCC plant includes a next-generation 50-hertz 9FB Gas Turbine, a steam turbine, a generator, 22 megawatts of GE wind turbines and 50 megawatts of eSolar concentrated solar thermal tower technology, all seamlessly integrated by a GE Mark* Vle plant control system with a single button start. At MetCap site conditions, this technology is capable of reaching a record high 69 percent thermal efficiency. In addition to new global standards for efficiency, the Dervish power plant will have zero-liquid discharge, lower emissions and a rapid-response, 28-minute start capability.

“At MetCap Energy, we believe our projects must simultaneously meet the need for increased energy, environmental responsibility and economic growth, while preserving precious water resources,” said Metin. “GE’s FlexEfficiency technology was evaluated versus other state-of-the-art alternatives and was selected because it is best aligned with our vision for the future.”

eSolar Investment

eSolar is a California-based provider of next-generation concentrated solar thermal tower technology. Through an investment by GE and MetCap announced in June, GE Energy already has a licensing agreement with eSolar, which grants GE exclusive worldwide rights to eSolar’s modular technology for its integrated Solar Combined Cycle (ISCC) power plant solution.

“Our investment in eSolar is another step in our journey to transform the energy industry,” said Metin. “We’ve accomplished all of this with very attractive financial returns for MetCap. We think this represents the future of power generation.”

“eSolar is proud to participate in the groundbreaking IRCC project, integrating our solar thermal tower technology with GE’s wind and FlexEfficiency gas-fired technologies,” said John Van Scoter, CEO and president of eSolar. “We look forward to other opportunities like the Dervish project.”

eSolar’s power plant technology uses small, flat, pre-fabricated mirrors called heliostats to track the sun and reflect its heat to a tower-mounted receiver. This generates steam used by the plant’s power block to create electricity. Thousands of heliostats are aligned and controlled using advanced software algorithms to precisely focus the sun’s energy. eSolar’s technology is architected to provide modular fields that maximize energy production, are scalable to meet a wide range of customers’ power generation needs, while also enabling rapid, lower-cost deployment.

2324Al Zahra Hospital, Sharjah, announced today (Wednesday, October 19, 2011) that it has performed a first-of-its-kind knee implant surgery in the U.A.E. The Freedom Knee™, the world’s first total knee system was implanted in a 48-year old female patient today. This implant has been tested and approved by the US FDA for high flexion activities (e.g. praying, kneeling and sitting on the floor). The latest development complements Al Zahra Hospital’s continuous pursuit of new innovations in the medical field to ensure that UAE residents can be provided with the best possible treatments available across the globe.

Dr Deepak Bhatia, Senior Orthopedic Consultant, Al Zahra Hospital, said, “This has been a breakthrough surgery for us, and we take pride in becoming the first hospital in the region to use a knee implant of this kind. This advanced knee replacement system requires minimum bone cutting, which is a major benefit for the patients, as our population is known to have a high incidence of osteoporosis and less bone stock. Moreover, this knee provides the required high-flexion to allow our patients to perform their daily activities with complete freedom. Patients have also been able to carry out sporting activities such as swimming, golfing, tennis, and hill walking after undergoing this surgery. Dr Bhatia added that the new implant shortens the hospitalisation to around three days and is also suited for younger patients requiring a knee replacement surgery. The availability of a skilled medical team, state of the art diagnostic equipments and advanced surgical techniques also plays a vital role in such surgeries.

Dr Asit Shah, the lead designer behind the Freedom Knee, pointed out, “Long survival of any joint implant needs good anthropometric analysis based on the target population, and the implant design should take these specific anatomical differences into consideration. The Middle Eastern knee is different as there is a difference in the shape and angle of the tibia and femur. With the high prevalence of obesity and osteoporosis amongst patients in the region, by the time the patient has come for surgery the knee problems are very advanced. With the new system available, patients can be assured of a high-flexion knee replacement that requires minimum bone resection.”
