471On 10 January 2015, HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai & Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, won the 2015 HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup presented by Longines and hosted by the Dubai Equestrian Club at the Dubai International Endurance City.

To further its long-term commitment with Meydan, Longines was once again the Presenting Partner, Official Timekeeper and Official Watch of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup, which took place in Dubai on 10 January 2015. This impressive international event featured some of the top names from the world of endurance riding competing over a distance of 160 km. The winner of the cup, HH Sheilkh Hamdan, received, along with the prestigious trophy, an elegant Longines watch, the Longines 24 Hours Single Push-Piece Chrono. This stainless steel chronograph watch piece of the Heritage Collection houses a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement. Its refined black dial displays hours in a 24 hours scale, minutes and small seconds at 9 o’clock and date. In addition, the total prize money for the winners of the Endurance Cup amounted to AED 9.6 million.

Longines is a significant partner of endurance riding. Besides the renowned HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Endurance Cup presented by Longines since 2010, the Swiss watch brand is also the title partner of the Longines FEI World Endurance Championships, which will take place in 2016. The discipline shares Longines’ values of elegance, precision, reliability and a perfect mastery of technique.

The passion of Longines for equestrian sports dates back to 1878, with the design of a chronograph featuring an engraved jockey and his mount. In 1912 the brand is partnering for the first time with an international show-jumping competition in Portugal. This passion continues today as, in addition to endurance riding, Longines is also committed in show jumping and horseracing.

Elegance, Performance and Tradition are values that both equestrian sport and Longines share. Longines’ growing involvement and partnerships to umbrella institutions, prestigious events, as well as numerous races and competitions in equestrian sport make the Swiss watch brand resolutely indissociable from the equestrian world.

GreenStar Hub Smart City App Wins Mobile App Challenge hosted by King Abdullah Economic City

GreenStar Hub Smart City App Wins Mobile App Challenge hosted by King Abdullah Economic City

4153GreenStar Hub (GSH) has just launched what is being touted by smart city experts as “the most comprehensive green smart city mobile app ever built.” The app, which was designed specifically for the Saudi government’s new “mega city,” King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), provides an innovative tool for businesses and residences to find products, services, and aggregated purchasing opportunities so that they can prosper at KAEC.

Going forward, GSH hopes to collaborate with the Saudi government’s Economic Cities Authority (ECA), Emaar, private businesses, and smart city technology leaders (IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, and others) to integrate GSH’s technology platform into KAEC’s supporting smart city infrastructure.

The smart city app called “KAEC for All” is expected to provide information and reporting that will improve the environmental and economic health of the city and its residents. With business-to-consumer features like a business directory, calendar events, job openings, transportation information, permit statuses, and marketplace, the app brings a new level of useful comprehensive solutions and data-sharing to smart cities.

The smart city app also provides business-to-government features such as: eGov services, tenders, ideas and problems submission, citywide microblogging, community buying, discussion forum, Industrial Valley/Port/Residential project information, green policies, and geo-tagged nearby businesses. The app has enabled technologies to accommodate for ECA eGov services for real-time application and status tracking.

“As KAEC is already a leader in the development of smart cities, we are thrilled to be able to implement what has already been called ‘the most comprehensive green smart city mobile app ever built’,” said Fahd Al-Rasheed, Managing Director and CEO of KAEC. “It will be a tremendously useful tool in making KAEC the premier living destination in the Kingdom.”

Why did GreenStar Hub launch a smart city app for KAEC?

GSH was looking for a city to pilot its technology; KAEC is a mega economic city with seamless technology integration opportunities. When GSH CEO visited KAEC to learn about the city’s sustainability efforts and needs, he also learned about KAEC’s mobile app challenge. “I had a very positive impression of KAEC and its management team on my visit as I learned about the green initiatives and design challenges overcame as they design, build, and rollout a sustainable economic city,” says Tam Phung, CEO of GreenStar Hub. “Fahd Al Rasheed, Managing Director and CEO of KAEC, and his team designed a master plan and rollout that minimizes environmental impact, yet meets the goals of shareholders, businesses, and residences”, Phung added.

Winning the Challenge:

GSH’s KAEC for All app won the “Best Overall” award among 29 other entrants from around the world. Startups and large companies were encouraged to submit existing or prototype apps. The judges based their decision on: creativity, usefulness, and commercialization potential.

“With a sound communications infrastructure already in place,” said Fahd Hamidaddin, Head of Marketing, Communications and Sustainability at KAEC. “GreenStar Hub saw the opportunity to develop an app that could use what was already in place to bring services directly to the hands of residents and business owners.”

“There were many great entries. KAEC for All app has innovative technologies that met the criteria for winning the app challenge. We are excited about the potential this app has to offer,” says Fahd Hamidaddin, KAEC App Challenge Judge, Head of Marketing, Communication, & Corporate Sustainability, EEC.

Saudi Arabia is an emerging mobile market with massive construction projects in the pipeline for the Economic Cities with KAEC being the largest. Governments globally are taking sustainability seriously with mandates requiring sustainable practices to be adopted. GSH enabling technologies will help these cities achieve their goals. GSH plans to launch a version for New York City with strong interest from cities in Asia, Latin America, and the US.

There are three unique features of the new GreenStar Hub smart city app:

Green-In allows businesses to showcase how they are going green as well as their best practices, products and green initiatives. GreenStar Hub uses a 1-5 leaf rating system to score how truly green the product is.

Community Buying allows businesses and residents to aggregate their buying power improving return on investment and increase sales for vendors.

GreenWall allows businesses and service providers to showcase green, sustainable practices, products and services. Users can view a brief bio on businesses and their community members. Government agencies will receive real-time ideas and problems reported by the users.

“New York City is quickly emerging as a leader in sustainable businesses, thanks to the innovation of local companies like GreenStar Hub,” said David Gilford, Vice President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. “This award is a great example of how technology can accelerate the adoption of sustainable products and services, both here in New York City and across the world.”

It is now available on the Android market and can be found in Google’s Play Store. The iPhone version will be released later this month. Additional mobile smart city apps are currently being developed for NYC and other cities.

Ford 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine Wins Unprecedented Third Consecutive ‘International Engine of the Year’ Honour

Ford 1.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine Wins Unprecedented Third Consecutive ‘International Engine of the Year’ Honour

424Ford Motor Company’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost® engine, which lowers fuel consumption without sacrificing power, was today named 2014 International Engine of the Year for an unprecedented third straight year.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost – available for Ford Fiesta and slated as a power offering for the 2015 Focus as well – fought off competition from premium brands and supercar contenders to win the award for its driveability, performance, economy, refinement and technology.

A panel of 82 automotive journalists from 35 countries also named the engine Best Engine Under 1.0-Liter for the third year in a row at Engine Expo 2014 in Stuttgart, Germany.

“This year’s competition was the fiercest yet, but the 1.0-liter EcoBoost continues to stand out for all the right reasons – great refinement, surprising flexibility and excellent efficiency,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman, 16th International Engine of the Year awards and editor, Engine Technology International magazine. “The 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is one of the finest examples of powertrain engineering.”

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost has now won 13 major awards. In addition to collecting seven International Engine of the Year awards in three years – including Best New Engine in 2012 – the 1.0-liter EcoBoost also was awarded the International Paul Pietsch Award 2013 for technological innovation in Germany; the Dewar Trophy from Royal Automobile Club in Great Britain; and the Breakthrough Award from Popular Mechanics in the United States. Ford is the first automaker to win Ward’s 10 Best Engines trophy for a three-cylinder engine.

“The EcoBoost engine technology is one of the key pillars in Ford Motor Company’s greening of its products without compromising on performance,” said Kalyana Sivagnanam, director of Ford Middle East and North Africa. “This recognition represents yet another seal of approval of the unique innovation which Ford has brought to the automotive industry. EcoBoost continues to grow in our region, with increased offerings across the Ford and Lincoln ranges. We are confident that the EcoBoost following will grow as more customers realise the benefits of this technology, which combines more torque and power than traditional larger-sized engines with better fuel economy and lower emissions.”

Global power

Ford vehicles equipped with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine are now available in 72 countries worldwide. Later this year, U.S. customers will be able to buy the new Focus 1.0-liter EcoBoost. The Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost is in dealerships now.

More than 200 engineers and designers from Ford research and development centers in Aachen and Merkenich in Germany, and Dagenham and Dunton in the United Kingdom spent 5 million-plus hours developing the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

The engine’s compact, low-inertia turbocharger spins at up to 248,000 rpm – more than 4,000 times per second and almost twice the maximum rpm of the turbochargers powering 2014 Formula 1 race car engines.

With an engine block small enough to fit in the overhead luggage compartment of an airplane, the 1.0-liter features a cylinder head with an integrated and cooled exhaust manifold that lowers exhaust temperatures for optimizing the fuel-to-air ratio. An innovative flywheel and front pulley design delivers improved refinement compared with traditional three-cylinder engine designs.

Engine friction is reduced by specially coated pistons, low-tension piston rings, low-friction crank seals and a cam-belt-in-oil design. A variable-displacement oil pump tailors lubrication to demand and optimizes oil pressure for improved fuel efficiency.

“The 1.0-liter EcoBoost was created as a radical, smaller-displacement engine to meet the biggest automotive challenge in the world – no-compromise refinement, performance and great fuel economy,” said Andrew Fraser, manager, Gasoline Calibration, Ford of Europe. “The secret to EcoBoost success is a range of innovative technologies that deliver big-car benefits from a small engine.”

In the Middle East region, EcoBoost engines were first introduced on certain 2010 model year vehicles, beginning with the Ford Flex. Today, the technology is available on the Ford Focus ST, Taurus SHO, Flex, Explorer Sport, as well as the Lincoln MKZ, MKS and MKT. More models are expected to feature this innovative powertrain later this year.
