Farnek encourages hoteliers to optimize sustainability goals with industry specific web-based technology

238Hotel Optimizer software programme to take centre stage at World Green Tourism exhibition; cost-saving technology offers practical solutions

to address rising energy costs and reduce consumption

Cost-saving technology targeting energy consumption within the hospitality industry will headline Farnek Avireal’s participation at the World Green Tourism exhibition, which takes place from 5-7 December at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

The Hotel Optimizer programme has been created to help the region’s hoteliers effectively manage and reduce both the costs and consumption of energy, water and waste disposal via easy-to-use web-based benchmarking software.

According to a recent study conducted by the company, five-star city hotels in Dubai are using up to 225% more energy than their European counterparts. “With energy saving directly related to cost saving, the findings have highlighted significant savings for hotels in Dubai and throughout the region, thereby potentially boosting bottom line performance,” said Markus Oberlin, General Manager, Farnek Avireal.

The study, which benchmarked Dubai hotel average consumption against comparable European properties, revealed that hotels in the emirate use up to 1,250 litres of water per guest compared to 350 litres in Germany, with power usage of 275-325 per square metre versus just 100 kWh in German hotels.

“As a market leader in sustainability, we have been helping hotels and resorts to reduce their carbon footprint through our exclusive association with Green Globe, the international sustainability certification programme for the tourism and hospitality industry, and the Hotel Optimizer software is a complementary product that enables our environmentally-focused clients to make significant cost savings of between 15 to 20% across key areas of their operation,” remarked Oberlin.

“Using our advanced technology, customers can calculate their CO2 emissions including the real cost of wasteful energy and water consumption, as well as non-recyclable waste production,” he added.

Hotel Optimizer functionality enables hotels to easily identify cost-saving opportunities and set realistic annual targets at the click of a button, as well as download unbiased overviews of operational water and energy costs.

Farnek Avireal will also launch the next generation edition of Hotel Optimizer software at World Green Tourism, with programme upgrades including detailed analytics and cost saving indications, a month-on-month comparison chart spanning four years that allows users to track progress, and the ability to add property-specific commentary. “We have also refined the actual graphic display to enhance functionality and make it even more user-friendly,” said Oberlin.

Hotel companies visiting World Green Tourism that sign up onsite to subscribe to Farnek Avireal’s Hotel Optimizer technology software will receive a free property energy audit and carbon emission analysis. A prize draw will also be held on the final day of the show with the chance to win one of three Hotel Optimizer annual subscriptions.

Farnek Avireal will be exhibiting at World Green Tourism on Stand No. B3 in Conference hall A. World Green Tourism is the only global event dedicated to the investment and development of sustainable tourism in the region, and will be held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from 5-7 December 2011.

Latest latex the last word in sustainable printing technology

2209IPEX Digital Middle East which opened today (14 November) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) showcased the latest in Latex printing technologies which are now set to supercede the more environmentally damaging solvent ink printers, according to experts at the show.

Ashish Panjabi, COO, Jacky’s, reseller for HP, which is exhibiting at IPEX commented, “These water-based latex inks need no special ventilated storage and when used they are not considered hazardous waste material and can be disposed of safely with everyday refuse.”

As with many sustainability initiatives there is always a correlation between good environmental practice and cost-savings and latex technology is no different.

“Being water-based we save money on storage, no need for ventilated stores or printing areas. Customers also save money as Latex can be used in both indoor and outdoor environments safely, irradiating the need for multiple dedicated printers. Finally it improves turnaround time so that printers can take on more short notice jobs,” added Panjabi.

The benefits are not confined there. In addition, the ink is more durable, the quality is far superior and you can print on a broader range of materials.

“Even the packaging is 100% recyclable,” said Panjabi

“IPEX will bring together businesses involved in print production, creative and design, print finishing, pre-press, photography, publishing and many other sectors of the industry – both global and regional,” said Binu Pillai, Exhibition Director of IPEX Digital Middle East.

Apart from the Latex technology which was created by HP, the digital leader will be showcasing their ‘versatile’ printing solutions for graphics, as well as books and publications.

“With digital technology driving innovation in the sector at an unprecedented pace, it is now essential for industry players to stay connected to this fast-paced marketplace,” commented Binu Pillai, Exhibition Director, IPEX Digital Middle East.

Running alongside IPEX is Signage, Imaging and Media (SIM), sponsored by Advanced Interactive Media Solutions, which will focus on the exponential growth of social media and other online marketing communications throughout the region.

Besides Gold sponsors HP, also exhibiting at the show are silver sponsors Konica Minolta Holdings Inc, a Japanese manufacturer of office equipment, medical imaging, graphic imaging, optical devices, and measuring instruments.

Porsche underlines future technology at Dubai International Motor Show

268Dubai. Porsche will emphasize its “Intelligent Performance” at the Dubai International Motor Show (November 10-14), with the display of the racing laboratory 918 RSR and new 911 Carrera.

Porsche Intelligent Performance revolves around three tenets: innovative strength, technological leadership, environmental friendliness and safety.

While the company is renowned for producing some of the world’s most iconic sports cars, the auto maker’s engineers are committed to incorporate this eco-philosophy into each new vehicle.

Visitors to the Porsche stand during the show will be able to experience the cutting edge of Porsche Intelligent Performance live with the 918 RSR on display.

The mid-engine coupe features a V8 engine offering an output of precisely 563 hp at 10,300 rpm. The electric motors on the two front wheels each contribute 75 kW, i.e. a total of 150 kW, to the peak drive power of exactly 767 hp. Put simply, when the 918 RSR brakes, electricity is made and stored in the flywheel accumulator. This energy is used to support the engine, whilst saving fuel and increasing the overall efficiency.

But also Porsche’s regional debut model, the new 911 Carrera, reveals the philosophy in action. The dramatically re-designed 911 features an athletic 350 hp 3.4-litre boxer engine, which consumes a mere 8.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres - that’s 1.6 litres per 100 km less than its predecessor.

And with an emission level of 194 g/km CO2, it is the first Porsche sports car to make it below the 200 g/km mark.

The all-new, lightweight body is an intelligent aluminium-steel construction, providing an overall weight reduction of up to 45 kilogrammes, and significantly greater rigidity.

George Wills, newly-appointed Managing Director of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, says: “Porsche Intelligent Performance ensures each of our vehicles is produced with maximum efficiency, fuel economy and the lowest possible emissions. It’s a commitment that permeates everything we do, and I am looking forward to communicating the ideas behind the principle to the motor show visitors.”

To underline Porsche’s history of innovative leadership visitors to the Dubai Motor Show have the opportunity to watch a specially-made film directly on the stand in an exclusive cinema experience.

Environmental Construction Exhibition in Dubai to shed light on green construction technology

• Global market for green building materials estimated to be worth USD 406 billion by 2015
• More than 35 international concrete construction experts to share insights on advanced construction materials, innovative practices and smart construction
• Event to be held from December 12 to 14 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, DIFC

251

1st edition of Future Concrete Conference

Dubai, United Arab Emirates; October 3, 2011: Advanced Construction and Technology Services (ACTS), a consulting organisation in the field of construction materials and geotechnical engineering, has announced that the upcoming edition of its Future Concrete Conference will feature the first Environmental Construction Exhibition which will showcase an array of products and technologies designed to make the construction industry in the Middle East more environment friendly. The exhibition will run concurrently with the Future Concrete Conference in Dubai from December 12 to 14, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, DIFC.

The event is being hosted at a time when the global market for green building materials is expected to be worth USD 406 billion by 2015, fuelled mainly by increasing environmental consciousness, high energy costs, and a better understanding of the long-term benefits of green buildings such as improved efficiency, cost savings and higher production.

Regionally, countries like the UAE have been leading the green building drive. For instance, in late 2007, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, issued a directive mandating builders and developers in Dubai to comply with green building standards to ensure a healthy and environment-friendly city. On the other hand, the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, with its Masdar initiative, is seeking to become a centre for the development and implementation of clean energy technology. Further, the emirate recently rolled out the Arab world’s first specialised green building rating system, Estidama, requiring all new developments in Abu Dhabi to comply with the standards set by the system, including commercial and government projects.

“Most attention in green buildings is focused on reducing the emissions of operating a building because of the long life and thus cumulative impact associated with energy, waste, and other materials used during a building’s lifetime. However, increased attention will focus on the practices necessary to reduce the emissions associated with building construction, renovation, and demolition. This is the next frontier for the construction industry, which must establish new systems and procedures to lower the carbon footprint of construction activities,” said Abdul Kader Kairouz, Chairman of the exhibition’s organising committee and ACTS Vice-President.

More than 35 international construction experts are set to share their insights on a number of issues including concrete of the 21st century, advanced construction materials and innovative practices and smart construction.

“Participating in the Environmental Construction Exhibition this year will provide a very effective marketing platform for suppliers of innovative construction products and services. It is a unique opportunity for local and international design firms, contractors and suppliers to position their companies in the environmental construction industry that is clearly set to grow,” said Dr. Maher El Barrak, Chairman of the Technical Committee and head of the conferences and training division at ACTS.

Incorporating the Environmental Construction Exhibition into the Future Concrete Conference promises to reward attendees with a great opportunity to access a wealth of information from exhibitors and speakers under one roof. This combination will link hot topics in concrete construction with the practical aspects of green building, eco-construction, environmental consulting, demolition recycling and waste and water management.

HP Extends Converged Storage Leadership with New Storage Federation Technology

2196

Walid Gomaa StorageWorks Business Unit Manager HP Middle East

Dubai, UAE, – HP today expanded its Converged Storage portfolio with HP Peer Motion, new federated storage software which enables clients to transparently move application workloads between disk systems in virtualized and cloud computing environments.

HP also introduced new HP P10000 3PAR Storage Systems with powerful features for the delivery of enterprise IT within public and private clouds, called IT-as-a-Service. These features include multitenancy for workload consolidation, expanded thin technologies for efficient capacity utilization and autonomic load rebalancing to drive enterprise agility.

IDC estimates that by 2012, 85 percent of new applications will be specifically designed to be accessed in the cloud.(1) Agile delivery of these virtualized and cloud based applications  requires linking multiple storage systems together to act as a single entity. Called storage federation, this capability can eliminate the extra layer of virtualization appliances and, as a result, decrease cost, administration overhead and service level risk within the data center architecture

“Legacy storage systems architected 20 years ago were never designed for the dynamic IT-as-a-Service world, forcing organizations to use expensive and inefficient bolt-on virtualization approaches,” said Walid Gomaa, Storage Business Unit and Sales Manager, HP Middle East. “The true peer-based storage federation in HP Converged Storage solutions can handle the inherent unpredictability of always-on, multitenant environments while reducing expense, management overhead and risk to service levels.”

Agility to deal with unpredictable demands

New HP Peer Motion software, available for HP LeftHand and 3PAR Storage Systems, delivers the industry’s first peer-to-peer storage federation capabilities that span from a virtual storage area network (SAN) software appliance to midrange and high-end storage systems. HP 3PAR and HP LeftHand Peer Motion software enables clients to:

—  Ensure constant productivity and redistribute workloads non-disruptively in response to an unpredictable environment with federated workload balancing.

—  Increase return on investment with federated Thin Provisioning, which transparently moves application data to systems with available capacity, reducing the need for future storage purchases.

—  Improve productivity by moving data from retiring arrays to new systems nondisruptively with federated asset management, which eliminates downtime or service interruption during storage asset refresh activities.

“Our research is telling us what IT executives all over the globe already suspect, namely that taking the same approach with storage in next generation data centers won’t deliver the results needed,” said Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, a full-service IT analyst and business strategy firm. “The new HP 3PAR platform scores at or near the top of every open-systems criteria we’ve considered for tier 1 storage for this new data center model.”

Simplified management without sacrificing performance

Clients can be confident that the innovation which made 3PAR unique is continuing as part of HP. Less than a year following HP’s acquisition of 3PAR, the company is introducing the HP P10000 3PAR Storage System with two new models, the V400 and V800 (HP 3PAR V-Class). The HP 3PAR V-Class is a powerful, mission-critical storage system that simultaneously supports mixed, unpredictable and multitenant workloads on a single high-performance array. This unique capability is delivered by the HP 3PAR Gen4 ASIC, which simplifies management by:

—  Consolidating unpredictable workloads, such as financial trading and virtualized application deployments, without the need for manual separation of diverse workloads on to different storage resources or storage systems.

—  Providing 1.5 times greater port connectivity and disk resources, as well as up to three times greater performance for sequential workloads such as data analytics, versus previous 3PAR systems.(2)

—  Autonomically load balancing all data within the array in one click as new resources are added to the system, raising the performance and service level availability of all volumes on the system.

Efficiency to meet the demands of explosive data growth

Clients using competitive storage arrays typically achieve written data utilization rates as little as 10 to 20 percent.(3) The HP 3PAR V-Class eliminates the need to purchase unnecessary disk space by fully leveraging available capacity with:

—  Three times greater bandwidth for fat-to-thin conversion, which allows clients to quickly move their data to more efficient thin volumes, achieving greater capacity utilization.(3)

—  Identification and reclamation of unused storage capacity in granular increments as an application writes and deletes data with a new “nano reclamation” engine.

—  Remote data replication that detects and eliminates unused space in traditional volumes, reducing network and remote capacity needs.

The HP 3PAR V-Class is a core technology of the new HP VirtualSystem and HP CloudSystem solutions, which integrate hardware, software and services to speed deployment and enable a simple path to an open, hybrid cloud enterprise.

Additional HP 3PAR information is available at www.hp.com/go/p4000 www.hp.com/go/path2cloud.

HP’s premier client event, HP DISCOVER, takes place Nov. 29 - Dec. 1 in Vienna, Austria. The event showcases how organizations can get started on their Instant-On Enterprise journeys.

70 per cent of technology executives read print media for technology news monthly, although online news most popular, reveals survey

Eurocom Worldwide Technology Market Survey shows 48% read print industry journals at least every week; smartphones widely used to access online news

July 14, 2011

Nidal AbouZaki

Nidal AbouZaki

The latest annual technology market survey conducted by Eurocom Worldwide, the global PR network, has revealed that 70 per cent of executives in technology businesses read print journals at least once a month, and nearly half (48 per cent) read print journals at least once a week. And national newspapers continue to be an important source for technology industry news.

The survey, conducted in association with Orient Planet, the Middle East representative of Eurocom Worldwide, shows that the most widely used source of technology industry news is online media cited by three quarters (76 per cent) of respondents. The next most widely used sources are industry print journals (42 per cent) and national newspapers (38 per cent).

The survey, which measured sentiments and media usage among 664 senior executives in technology based businesses around the world, including the GCC region, found that a further 37 per cent use search tools to access technology industry news.

“These findings show that there continues to be an appetite for specialist media, not only online but also in print format. While many print media may be experiencing competitive pressure from online news sources, whether magazines or newspapers, they still appear able to attract the readers,” commented Nidal Abou Zaki, Managing Director, Orient Planet.

The Eurocom Worldwide survey also found that 26 per cent of executives in technology businesses use blogs as a source of news and 30 per cent use various social media formats

Perhaps even more significant is the means by which news sources are accessed. The majority of respondents to the survey (87 per cent) access online news through a laptop PC but more interestingly 54 per cent of respondents now use smartphones, and 16 per cent use a tablet such as an iPad to source news.

“It is important for publishers and companies with ambitions in content provision to embrace such a variety of user devices. The content published needs to be flexible to adapt to different formats, and tailored to the needs of the users. In several of our member agencies it has become an important service area to supply clients with managed news streams and regularly updated content.  These findings support the need for this type of service,” said Mads Christensen, network director of Eurocom Worldwide.

The Eurocom Worldwide Technology Market Survey 2011 was conducted by the network and its member agencies during January and February 2011, and surveyed 664 senior level executives in technology based businesses across more than 30 countries worldwide.
