Laila Al Sheikhly to join Alarab News Channel

She will anchor one of the channel’s news programmes and brings with her nearly 25 years of experience in broadcast journalism. Laila joins Alarab from Al Jazeera and will form part of a near-300 strong team bringing the region’s freshest news channel to air later this year.

4177The Royal Commission Yanbu Colleges and Institutes is the Kingdom’s first higher education institute to join SAP’s Dual Study Education Program, the organizations announced today.

SAP’s Dual Study Program, run by the SAP Training and Development Institute, provides students with an interwoven curriculum and work experience that prepares them for life after graduation.

The two-year-long program has three key blocks: technical and soft skill SAP courses; certifications in technical, functional, or business tracks; and on-the-job internship placement for three-to-six months that connects students with SAP’s customers and ecosystem partners. Following successful completion of the SAP Dual Study Program, students graduate as SAP Associate Consultants.

The partnership was marked by a signing ceremony with delegations from the Royal Commission Yanbu Colleges and Institutes and SAP, led by Dr. Ahmed Dabroom, Director General, Royal Commission Yanbu Colleges and Institutes; and Ahmed Al Faifi, Managing Director, SAP Saudi Arabia.

The Royal Commission at Yanbu was established in the 1980s to provide preparation to Saudi students for middle- and higher-level career positions in industry, commerce, and government occupations, by providing appropriate knowledge and skills in all programs offered.

The higher education institute includes Yanbu Industrial College, Yanbu University College, and the Yanbu Technical Institute.

First Gulf airline to join oneworld alliance accused of breaching policies


428Qatar Airways (QR) allegedly broke oneworld airline alliance rules barely a week after joining the airline group, according to Arabian Business.

The first Gulf airline to join the alliance is supposedly denying premium frequent flyers from accessing the alliance-affiliated luxury lounges in London and Doha, thus constituting a breach to the oneworld policies.

Rather, the airline has only been granting access to the lounges for travelers flying in business or first class, regardless if they are considered “gold” or “premium” customers. High-status customers flying economy have been denied access in London’s Heathrow and Qatar’s Doha airports to the lounges.

Such practices are in direct conflict with oneworld’s lounge policy, which states that  “Members of oneworld airline frequent flyer programmes with the equivalent of oneworld Emerald or Sapphire tier status can use any lounge offered by any oneworld airline when departing on any flight marketed and operated by any oneworld member airline, regardless of cabin class being flown….Emerald tier frequent flyers can use First Class, Business Class or frequent flyer lounges. Sapphire tier frequent flyers are welcome in Business Class or frequent flyer lounges.”

QR has responded to the accusation by comparing its policy to the British Airways’ Concorde room at Heathrow which is only for BA’s first class passengers. Like BA, QR’s says that its premium lounge in London is “exclusive” and not included in the oneworld lounge scheme. “QR offers both first and business class lounge access for the first/business traveller, his/her guest, and emerald/sapphire travellers. In addition, QR offers a Premium Lounge which is only for (first and business) ticketed passengers on QR or another Oneworld member airline – not their guests, not emerald/sapphire passengers,” a Qatar Airways spokeswoman told Australian Business Traveller.

16 talented UAE National graduates join First Gulf Bank’s Nujoom fast-track management scheme


4101As part of continued efforts to encourage more UAE National youth to pursue careers in the banking sector, First Gulf Bank (FGB), one of the major leading banks in the UAE, has launched the third phase of its ‘Nujoom’ management training scheme for talented UAE National university graduates.

16 newly-graduated Emiratis from local and international universities have joined the programme, which will see them obtain a deeper knowledge of the finance and banking sectors, and acquire the skills they need to succeed in their future careers. A total of 58 graduates have now enrolled in the ‘Nujoom’ scheme to date.

The 18-month training programme is based at FGB’s on-site business school and offers participants to acquire real-life, hands-on experience of working across a variety of banking functions, in addition to developing general managerial and leadership skills. The Nujoom scheme reflects FGB’s genuine commitment towards workforce Emiratisation, combining practical experience and ‘real world’ industry exposure.

Commenting on the launch of the programme’s third phase, Abdulrahman Saqr, Senior Vice President and Head of Emiratisation at FGB, said, “There is no doubt that the UAE National community contains a wealth of untapped potential talent for the banking industry. We designed the Nujoom programme to fit with FGB’s strategy of building a sustainable pipeline of talented Emiratis to join our rapidly expanding network. With 58 UAE Nationals now enrolled across the different phrases we are already seeing that it is bearing fruit. We will continue to invest in this critical initiative which is mutually beneficial for both the bank and our local community.”

Noora Mohammed Al Reyaysi, FGB UAE National Development and Program Manager, at FGB, said, “The Nujoom programme exposes participants to the diverse business functions of the bank and helps them to understand where their key strengths lie, as well as developing their leadership and general business skills. We have already placed the earliest entrants, who have now graduated the programme, into key management areas across FGB, which is proof that Nujoom has become a vital channel for the development of human talent in the bank’s workforce. As the scheme becomes more established, we expect to see even more interest from the community in the opportunities that Nujoom offers young UAE Nationals.”

First Gulf Bank offers a range of mentoring and guidance programmes, including Al Manara Mentorship programme, and its recent summer training scheme. FGB has also launched First Gulf Bank Business School for its employees to promote their development and to provide them with new skills required in their specific positions and designations.

Qatar car rental users to join online shopping boom


2521With online shopping across the Arab world booming, growing numbers of car rental users in Qatar are expected to turn to the Internet for domestic and worldwide bookings.

Hertz Qatar, which operates four car rental locations in Doha, has just launched a new website along with a simplified version for mobile phone users.

The new site, hertz.qa, gives customers a quick and easy way to book rental vehicles at 8,500 locations worldwide, including Qatar and other Middle East countries.

Those visiting the site between now and 21 August can also take advantage of Eid discounts of up to 15% when renting with Hertz in Qatar, the Middle East region, Europe and USA.

Customers are directed to the award-winning main Hertz online platform, and can either prepay for their rentals in Qatari Riyals and save money at the same time, or pay when they pick up their vehicle.

Those on the move can do the same by connecting with mobile.hertz.com, a simplified website enabled for mobile phones.

“More and more people in Qatar, and in many other Arab countries, now at least want the option to shop online for many products from the convenience of their own home, or the office,” said Sanaa Ouahmane, General Manager, Hertz Qatar.
“We’re providing our customers with online platforms which are at the cutting edge of technology, and offer the best online experience available.”

Underlining the growing trend in online shopping, a report by research firm Euromonitor International earlier this year said online sales in the Arab world are forecast to top $2bn (QR7.3bn) by 2016.

In addition to its benefits for consumers, the new website will be welcomed by travel agents who will find it easier and faster to find a wider choice of Hertz car rental quotes when making bookings for customers.

Customers making bookings through the new website earn frequent flyer miles from Hertz global airline partners such as Qatar Airways Privilege Club, or receive points from Hertz hotel partners.

34 tourism professionals join ‘Discover Sharjah’ orientation drive


2195‘Discover Sharjah’ is the new mantra for the front office staff of the emirate’s growing tourism and hospitality sector. The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority has wrapped up a two-day orientation tour, Discover Sharjah, for selected representatives of some of the leading hotels in the emirate.

Thirty-four industry representatives attended the orientation tour that included lectures about Sharjah’s history, culture and tourism sector, as well as visits to the prominent tourist attractions and landmarks across the emirate.

The orientation tour took the trainees to a number of museums, art galleries, cultural and historical landmarks and popular tourist attractions and entertainment spots in the emirate.

The group visited the Sharjah University City, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Sharjah Aquarium, Maritime Museum, Al Mahatta Museum, Classic Cars Museum, Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Discovery Center and others.

Some of the popular tourist attractions that were on the itinerary included Al Majaz Waterfront with its number of upscale restaurants, a musical fountain and children’s play areas and Dr Sultan Al Qassimi Center for Gulf Studies which also boasts a collection of unique maps, rare books and coins.

The participants went in a tour around the Heritage Area in the old quarters of the emirate, where they were briefed on the ambitious Heart of Sharjah project.

The group explored the Heritage area on foot, visiting the Sharjah Heritage Museum, Beit Al Naboodah, Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, besides Al Eslah School, Souq Al Arsa and Majlis Al Midfa etc.

Underscoring the importance of the orientation tour, SCTDA Chairman HE Mohamed Ali Al Noman said that that the campaign was part of the Authority’s efforts to enhance the skills and services of the tourism sector staff updating them on the latest projects and developments in the emirate. Al Noman said that the Authority was committed to promoting Sharjah’s special tourism product locally, regionally and internationally.

The SCTDA Chairman added that the orientation tour has been timed to coincide with the summer when hotels in the emirate witness a sharp increase in occupancy rates, mostly from the GCC countries, especially after the recent SCTDA road shows in Gulf capitals. During the summer season, he pointed out, the emirate organises a number of promotional and entertainment events and exhibitions like Sharjah Summer Promotions and Ramadan and Eid Fair that includes an exhibition and celebrates the Holy month with greater fervour.

“We are counting on summer events and activities to increase tourism inflow into the emirate this season,” said Al Noman.

“Thanks to its natural diversity and cultural richness, Sharjah has emerged as one of the favourite tourism destinations in the region,” pointed out Al Noman.

“Even as it remains true to its traditions, the emirate boasts modern infrastructure and international hotels and resorts attracting visitors from all over the world.”

Over the past year or so, the SCTDA has organised a number of campaigns introducing Sharjah’s tourism product and services, including Know Your Destination, Sharjah Treasures and Sharjah’s Petrol and Natural Gas Resources for the benefit of representatives of the leading hotels and tourism operators.

Modhesh World welcomes visitors to join the ‘Hag-e-Laila’ celebrations on July 5th


269Modhesh World, one of the biggest indoor edutainment venues in the Middle East, is expecting to receive thousands of visitors as it commemorates ‘Hag-e-Laila’ on Thursday, 5th of July. A popular event, ‘Hag-e-Laila’ marks the 15th day of the Islamic month of Sha’ban and is celebrated to welcome Ramadan.

Families and children will definitely enjoy the cheerful atmosphere, colourful decors, and special activities launched at Modhesh World to mark the important occassion.

At the entrance of Hall 6, visitors will be greeted by the Harbeya, a traditional Arabic folk dance performed by a group of men. The highly entertaining dance performance will start from 4pm and will continue every hour until 11 in the evening.

Another exciting performance that is set to excite the crowd is the Liwa Traditional Band who will be roaming around Hall 3 to give everyone a chance to enjoy their dance show every hour from 4:30pm until 11:30 in the evening.

On the mini-stage at Hall 2, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, Po and Tinky Winky, the lovable characters from the popular children’s television series ‘Teletubbies,’ are set to excite thousands of children as they make their first appearance at Modhesh World. They are scheduled to perform daily, except on Monday, 9th until 14th July, with timings at 4pm, 5pm, 7.30pm and 9m.

Government officials from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority as well as the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority will also join in the celebrations as they give away traditional sweets, chocolates and candies to visitors on the day.

Various zones like the Lego area, Parent Zone, Arts and Crafts, Discovery Centre, and the Modhesh Salon have attractive offers and giveaways for everyone. The Heritage Zone will be organizing traditional games and competitions that will delight the visitors, where bags of goodies and free entry tickets will be given away to the winners.

Snacks like juice, ice cream and cakes will also be distributed throughout the venue.
