iPad clones flood the market

253Portland: The success of Apple Inc.’s iPad isn’t just drawing more competition to the tablet market. It’s attracting thousands of counterfeit and knockoff products.

On a single day in July, almost 18,000 fakes and clones resembling the iPad and Android devices were available for sale on 23 e-commerce sites, according to MarkMonitor Inc., a San Francisco-based firm that helps companies protect their brands.

The tablets can be illegal — for instance, if they have a bogus Apple logo — and often they don’t work well and have no warranty protection, said Fred Felman, chief marketing officer of MarkMonitor. The copycat products and suspected counterfeits found in MarkMonitor’s survey were offered by more than 5,000 sellers, many of them located in China.

Knockoff iPads may proliferate during the year-end holiday season, as shoppers beset by the economic slump go hunting for bargains. That’s creating more competition for Apple, even if many consumers only buy the tablets because they believe they’re getting the real thing. Apple’s advantage is its software is hard to replicate, said Francis Sideco, an analyst at research firm IHS Inc.

“You can only copy to a certain degree,” he said. For instance, knockoff tablets may not connect to Apple’s iTunes and App Store. “It’s not necessarily about hardware but the software, and it’s very difficult to copy that,” Sideco said. Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, declined to comment.

Apple released the iPad in April 2010, and it quickly emerged as the company’s No. 2 product category behind the iPhone. The tablet generated $6.9 billion (Dh25.33 billion) last quarter, out of a total earnings of $28.3 billion. The device has attracted scads of leg-itimate competitors, with many manufacturers using Google Inc.’s Android software.

Amazon.com Inc. also is jumping into the market this holiday season. It will release its $199 Kindle Fire tablet later this month, aiming to undercut the iPad, which starts at $499.

Graphic Designer wins an iPad from Jacky’s Electronics

Company concludes Facebook competition in a high note

Release Date: 28th April 2010

2276Jumping atop Burj Khalifa, changing their names to Jacky’s and a lot more creative and innovative ideas were among the things people would do to win an Apple iPad for free but an artistic video executing what the participant would actually do to be the new owner of the iPad has bested the rest and was hailed the winner of the first Facebook competition of Jacky’s Electronics.

Glenn Roxas, a graphic designer, took a creative 1-minute video of himself to let everyone know about Jacky’s iPad competition by going around Dubai Superman-style, walking on the middle of Sheikh Zayed Road, and socialising with other nationalities.

“I shot the video one half day and I wasn’t really expecting to win. Thank you Jacky’s for holding the competition and I can’t wait to use my new iPad in rolling out my creative ideas,” said Roxas.

Close to 600 comments, videos and pictures were entered onto Jacky’s Facebook fan page – www.facebook.com/jackysuae, for the contest dubbed as ‘What would you do to win an iPad at Jacky’s?’ from 18th to 25th April 2010. After much deliberation, the judging team at Jacky’s chose Roxas as the best entry, which showed uniqueness and real creativity.

“Social networking sites such as Facebook are important tools for us to interact and engage with our customers. We, at Jacky’s, have always aim to provide our customers with updated information whether it’s on products, promotions or industry news in the UAE. This competition allowed us to not only reward our loyal customers with an iPad, but also know their feedbacks as well,” said Ashish Panjabi, Chief Operating Officer, Jacky’s Electronics.

“Right from the time we announced this competition, we’ve been inundated with feedback from potential winners on all the whacky and crazy things they would do for an iPad.  With the craze for this product being unrivalled to anything else we’ve seen in a while, it was only natural we decided to have a contest based around this,” he added.

Second runner-up 15-year old Dana Salim received an iPod Touch, while third runner-up Nicoli Malabonga, 17-year old, got an iPod Nano. An awarding ceremony was held at Jacky’s Electronics outlet in The Dubai Mall where radio DJs Catboy and Geordiebird from Dubai 92FM handed over the prizes to the winners. Geordiebird also sung few karaoke songs to get herself an iPad while five shoppers also received iPod shuffles during the on-the-spot competition.

Have you got an iPad?

ipad_inApple never ceases to surprise us by providing the world with amazing inventions and innovative takes on age-old concepts. So what is the company’s newest gadget to hit the market? It’s the iPad, revealed to the public for the first time on January 27th. The iPad is a medium-sized device that allows you to do everything you could do using an iPhone and more, but with more flexibility and ease. The smart invention is a bigger version of the iPhone and a smaller version of the Macbook, and it is as light as your wallet in the middle of the month (it weighs an incredible 1.5 pounds—less than 1 kilo)! The size of the iPad can also help you use it for more purposes than the iPhone like reading e-books or watching your favorite movies or series without getting your eyes tired. The multi-touch screen and the clarity on iPad makes it easy to surf the web, watch videos, utilize GPS navigation, play games exactly the way you are meant to experience them. iPad also provides you with great sound quality with built-in speakers to make you live the game you are playing, laugh with the show you are watching or dance with the song you are listening to wherever you are, online or offline. The iPad is extremely user friends and former Apple junkies will have no problem learning their way around the device. The price of an iPad ranges from $499 to $829 depending on the features and upgrades, and is unlikely to go down in the foreseeable future. A salute once again to Mr. Jobs and the Apple team! We can’t wait to get our hands on one.
