Ducab appoints new GM Sales and Marketing to direct strategic growth of company’s sales

Seasoned executive Colin McKay welcomes opportunity to take Ducab forward with new products across new and existing channels

Dubai, November 12, 2010:  In a move to capitalize on recent product diversification and expansion, Ducab—one of the leading manufacturers of power cables in the Middle East—has announced the appointment of a new General Manager for its global Sales & Marketing division based out of the company’s Jebel Ali headquarters in Dubai.  Senior executive Colin McKay will lead the integration of Ducab’s local and international marketing strategies, including the development of key projects within the Utilities, Oil Gas & Petrochemical sector, Ducab’s expanding contractor business within the Middle East, and the commercial launch of the AED 500m joint venture Ducab HV factory in 2011.

Andrew Shaw, MD, Ducab feels that the new appointment will reinforce Ducab’s commitment to superior customer service and its unique capacity to design tailor-made cable solutions, which today are supplied from its UAE facilities to over 30 countries worldwide.  Following the steps taken by his Ducab predecessor, Chew Wah Tan, collaborative projects in Qatar, KSA and sub-Saharan Africa through to Europe will also be a high priority for the incoming GM.

“Businesses today are not only looking for a good product, but a partner that understands their market and their financial aspirations,” comments Colin.  “For over three decades Ducab has constantly improved and customized its portfolio to align with market demand, and it is with great pride that I accept this role as an opportunity to contribute to such an important UAE business..”

Colin has successfully climbed the ranks of the international cable industry for the last 30 years.   Joining the fold of the internationally renowned cable manufacturer Delta Crompton Cables and having undergone a four year induction scheme in conjunction with the University of North London, Colin was one of the youngest men ever to assume the role of Commercial Manager with Delta at the age of just 28.   Subsequent roles in the Middle East with Delta and its subsidiary Cables & Plastics were among his early overseas assignments.

Joining Elektrim’s UK subsidiary Copper Cable Company (CCC) in the mid-1990s, Colin took the company’s cable sales from $15m to over $200m during his tenure.  Although Elektrim eventually sold its CCC operations to Tele-Fonika in 2000, Colin stayed on board and since 2000 has spent three periods as a Board Director latterly in the position of Vice-President Sales.

“Both as a market and as a headquarters, the UAE is the place to be in today’s cable industry and Ducab is a strong well recognised brand,” adds McKay.  “For Ducab in particular, demand has remained consistently strong, outpacing other developing markets and further defining the company as the Middle East’s leader in quality.”

Ducab was previously been honoured with the recognitions such as the “Mohammed Bin Rashid Business Excellence Award” and “Emirates Quality Mark Award” for its achievements in the manufacturing sector whilst the recent addition has been the 2nd consecutive Superbrands award for branding excellence in the region.

Basking in the Sun

Ready to take a plunge in the pool or head to the beach and achieve that sun-kissed look? With the 40 degrees weather, it is time to seriously start thinking of taking extra precautions while basking in the sun.

The ultraviolet (UV) radiations from the sun have two effects on the skin: UVB cause burning, and UVA cause ageing.

Most supermarkets store sunscreens as it is known to be a must-have item for everyone, especially for this time of the year. But have you ever wondered what’s with the numbers and descriptions on the packages?

Sunscreens come with descriptions such as SPF - 15, 30, 45 etc. SPF, the abbreviation for Sun Protection Factor, is a measurement of the effectiveness of sunscreens.

Normally, it takes about 20 minutes for a ‘light skinned individual’ to experience sun-burns if he or she is not wearing sunscreen protection.

At Merle Norman, we follow a simple equation to gauge the frequency of use of sunscreen. First, determine how long it would take you (in minutes) to burn without wearing sun protection, indicated by slight redness of the skin. Multiply the number by the SPF of the product, and divide it by 60 (minutes).

For instance, if you observe a sunburn sensation in 10 minutes and use SPF 30, multiply 10 by 30 = 300; divide by 60, which is 5; this corresponds to five hours; meaning, you have to apply the sunscreen every five hours.

Dermatologists recommend a teaspoon of sunscreen lotion for the face and approximately three tablespoons for the body. The more the sun protection applied, the better it is for your skin. Choose a sunscreen that provides protection against UVA and UVB rays. In case of excessive sweating or swimming, use products with water resistant formula and re-apply if you find the sunscreen wearing off.

The percentage of SPF content does not matter if applied based on the above equation. For example, by using a higher SPF sunscreen lotion or cream, you do not have to apply at more frequent intervals and a lower sunscreen product will need frequent re-applications.

While many people only associate sunscreen with a day out on the beach, it is to be remembered that even casual exposure to sun can be harmful to the skin. Remember! Effects of sun damage to the skin are irreversible and therefore prevention is the key! Sunscreen is thus an everyday use in the Gulf region, so slather on some even when going to the office!

Dark Circles

Dark Circles

MYTH
You can get rid of dark circles.

TRUTH
Under-eye circles can be the result of heredity, lack of sleep or even sun exposure. Nothing can be done to permanently eliminate them, but you can lessen their appearance with these simple tricks:

* Brighten up with eye cream containing optical diffusers such as LUXIVA® Brilliant-C Eye Cream. It provides instant luminosity around the eyes.
* Delete darkness with concealer. A peachy-pink tone neutralizes the bluish tinge. Apply directly over discoloration with the Makeup Artistry Eyes #6 Brush.
* Prevent future circles from forming by using a daily SPF around the eye area. Try LUXIVA® PREVENTAGE™ Firming Eye Creme SPF 15.

GM AND E-BAY LAUNCH JOINT VENTURE

If you want something new and are looking for a bargain, the best place to look online is e-bay without a doubt. However, who would have guessed that e-bay would eventually become a place where one can also purchase a car. However, in recent news it has been announced that General Motors and E-bay have launched a joint venture whereby potential car buyers can haggle online for car deals. Launched in California, the promotion will initially run until September 8. However, GM insists that dealers should not be concerned as the dealership will always be the end point of the transaction. Approximately 225 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Pontiac dealers will participate voluntarily via a new car shopping website, gm.ebay.com. Visitors to the site must enter the car they are looking for and their postal code. Customers can ‘’Buy Now’’ or go for the Best Offer option depending on what they want and their budget. In addition the joint venture will also allow buyers to arrange financing and payment for the car. The new site though really targets those who are comfortable negotiating and transacting at arm’s length, for everyone else a dealership is without doubt the next best thing. www.gm.ebay.com
