Ducab reports record AED3.6bn sales in 2010

2206Dubai, April 27, 2011- Ducab—one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality power cables in the Middle East—has announced today (April 27 2011) during a press conference held in Dubai, record sales of AED 3.6bn for 2010, representing a 51% increase over the previous year and 47% volume growth with full realisation of copper rod capacity.  Going forward this year, despite the global economic downturn and a rise in copper prices, Ducab anticipates a further increase in volumes of about 15% compared to 2010.

Ducab has seen a successful 2010 despite competitive margin pressures, with the company’s local UAE market share maintained at between 33 and 50 percent, depending on the cable segment. Last year’s record of AED 3.6bn comprised cable and wire sales of AED2.2bn whilst the external sales of copper rod accounted for the balance AED1.4bn. Significant areas of growth included 22% higher sales to Utilities and a 143% increase in sales to the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical sector.

Ahmad Al Shaikh, Chairman of Ducab, attributed the company’s success to expansion into new sectors and markets within the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Asia, as well as the addition of eight new product ranges to the company’s portfolio. Cost and efficiency improvement contributed too with savings of AED 17m achieved through operational efficiencies and cost optimisation initiatives.   In 2010 Ducab repaid, on the due dates, AED 182 million and pre-paid 100mn, representing 35% of term finance obtained for such previous expansions. Ducab’s shareholders equity has also increased by AED 100mn by the end of 2010, besides a dividend payout of 50mn.

Looking ahead to further expansion Ahmad Al Shaikh highlighted Ducab HV, the AED500m joint venture project with DEWA and ADWEA as 25% partners, “This exciting project is nearing completion and will be the major addition to the product range this year; catapulting Ducab to the next level with Extra High Voltage cable systems up to 400kV produced in a world class facility here in the UAE”.

“Last year was a very challenging period worldwide for an industry such as ours, where real estate and construction are major drivers of demand, and the Middle East market was no exception,” says Ahmad Al Shaikh. “Fortunately, infrastructure projects and energy investment throughout the GCC have been counter-cyclical in this downturn and have provided some compensation for the construction slowdown. Ducab managed to grow despite the market condition and increased competition in the region”. Ducab also continues to invest in identifying Emirati talent for various functions across the business with significant progress made last year in training and development of young Emiratis.

“We will continue to focus on Ducab’s traditional strengths of customer service and product quality, with the strong belief that such commitment to high quality and exceptional value will continue to drive the sale of Ducab cables and allied products across the region”, Al Shaikh concluded.

Ducab cables & copper products are currently sold in over 40 countries worldwide across Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Far East in Asia.  Approximately 65-70% of Ducab’s total sales are currently made within the UAE market.

Ducab consolidates its cables & copper products portfolio at Middle East Electricity Exhibition 2011

Market leader to focus on broadening product range and capabilities in 2011

233Dubai – 7 February 2011: Dubai Cable Company (Ducab), one of the leading manufacturers of power cables in the Middle East, will be showcasing its entire range of energy cables, connect accessories and copper products at the Middle East Electricity Exhibition 2011 (MEEE). The move comes as the organization looks to highlight its production capabilities while broadening its product range in 2011. Ducab aims to be prominently represented at stand 7E10, Hall 7, at the 36th edition of Middle East Electricity, which takes place at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre from 8th to 10th February 2011.

Ducab’s MEEE participation is going to serve as a platform to interact with the majority of UAE based loyal customers who have been the strength of Ducab, more so during the challenging times in the recent past. By offering top quality cables & copper products including drawn wires, conductors and rods, Ducab has established itself as a brand of first choice by most users in the market.  The company has established a copper rod mill as part of a backwards integration system where internationally sourced copper cathode is converted into highest grade rods and drawn into wires. These rods, which Ducab started manufacturing in 2008, are one of the main constituent of Ducab’s cables, but are also sold separately and exported to many countries outside of the Middle East region.

“There are several exciting developments occurring at Ducab, including the introduction of the HV /EHV range of cables going up to 400,000 volts. There is also a drive to establish regional and international market presence through a network that sees us come into closer proximity with our customers. We are looking forward to meeting our customers and stakeholders in person during the Middle East Electricity exhibition, and take advantage of the significant markets interest our products garnered through 2010 participation,” said Andrew Shaw, Ducab Managing Director.

Ducab is already exploring regional markets, but wants to use events like Middle East Electricity 2011 to expand its manufacturing presence and customer profile to key regional markets. While the UAE remains the cable manufacturer’s core market, countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Asia and parts of Europe look particularly promising in terms of business development. At current point in time, Ducab’s products are sold in over 40 countries worldwide, with approximately 65-70% of Ducab’s total sales made in the UAE.

“We consider MEEE an excellent platform to network with purchasers and decision-makers in the industry, and we are looking forward to a successful week ahead. We aim to highlight new additions to our product range, while simultaneously highlighting Ducab’s commitment to excellent customer service and engineering,” he added.

MEEE has firmly established itself as the meeting place for industry professionals wishing to network with, and source solutions from, local and international companies offering end-to-end solutions for  the power generation, lighting, water, nuclear and new & renewable energy industries. The 2010 iteration of the show was attended by over 45,000 industry professionals, purchasers, and decision-makers.

Ashish Chaturvedy, Marketing Manager, Ducab said, “Ducab actively participates at MEEE every year. The show provides a great opportunity for us to interact with existing and potential contractors, developers and consultants from Middle East, Africa, Europe and Asian region whilst allowing us to showcase our complete range of copper products, cables and cable accessories. MEEE 2010 served as an excellent platform to launch the new Ducab Connect product range of cable accessories and renew relationships with supply chain partners alike, and we look forward to a highly successful 2011 event.”

“We want to highlight the fact that Ducab, in addition to adding new volume capabilities with Ducab HV in 2011, is working to expand its offerings with products tailored to market demand, and the specific needs of our client,” he concluded.

Ducab appoints new GM Sales and Marketing to direct strategic growth of company’s sales

Seasoned executive Colin McKay welcomes opportunity to take Ducab forward with new products across new and existing channels

Colin McKay

Dubai, November 12, 2010:  In a move to capitalize on recent product diversification and expansion, Ducab—one of the leading manufacturers of power cables in the Middle East—has announced the appointment of a new General Manager for its global Sales & Marketing division based out of the company’s Jebel Ali headquarters in Dubai.  Senior executive Colin McKay will lead the integration of Ducab’s local and international marketing strategies, including the development of key projects within the Utilities, Oil Gas & Petrochemical sector, Ducab’s expanding contractor business within the Middle East, and the commercial launch of the AED 500m joint venture Ducab HV factory in 2011.

Andrew Shaw, MD, Ducab feels that the new appointment will reinforce Ducab’s commitment to superior customer service and its unique capacity to design tailor-made cable solutions, which today are supplied from its UAE facilities to over 30 countries worldwide.  Following the steps taken by his Ducab predecessor, Chew Wah Tan, collaborative projects in Qatar, KSA and sub-Saharan Africa through to Europe will also be a high priority for the incoming GM.

“Businesses today are not only looking for a good product, but a partner that understands their market and their financial aspirations,” comments Colin.  “For over three decades Ducab has constantly improved and customized its portfolio to align with market demand, and it is with great pride that I accept this role as an opportunity to contribute to such an important UAE business..”

Colin has successfully climbed the ranks of the international cable industry for the last 30 years.   Joining the fold of the internationally renowned cable manufacturer Delta Crompton Cables and having undergone a four year induction scheme in conjunction with the University of North London, Colin was one of the youngest men ever to assume the role of Commercial Manager with Delta at the age of just 28.   Subsequent roles in the Middle East with Delta and its subsidiary Cables & Plastics were among his early overseas assignments.

Joining Elektrim’s UK subsidiary Copper Cable Company (CCC) in the mid-1990s, Colin took the company’s cable sales from $15m to over $200m during his tenure.  Although Elektrim eventually sold its CCC operations to Tele-Fonika in 2000, Colin stayed on board and since 2000 has spent three periods as a Board Director latterly in the position of Vice-President Sales.

“Both as a market and as a headquarters, the UAE is the place to be in today’s cable industry and Ducab is a strong well recognised brand,” adds McKay.  “For Ducab in particular, demand has remained consistently strong, outpacing other developing markets and further defining the company as the Middle East’s leader in quality.”

Ducab was previously been honoured with the recognitions such as the “Mohammed Bin Rashid Business Excellence Award” and “Emirates Quality Mark Award” for its achievements in the manufacturing sector whilst the recent addition has been the 2nd consecutive Superbrands award for branding excellence in the region.

Ducab secures AED 110m award for supplying Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline

Announcement comes as company showcases unique OGP offerings at 14th ADIPEC show in Abu Dhabi, highlighting expansions and new units established in the last year

Laith Madi

Laith Madi

Abu Dhabi, November 2, 2010:  As the region’s key players from the OGP sector convene in Abu Dhabi this week for the ADIPEC 2010 show, Ducab—one of the leading manufacturers of power & special cables in the Middle East—has announced details of their recent contract win valued at AED 110m from China Petroleum Engineering and Construction Corporation (CPECC) to work on the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline (ADCOP).  Ducab is working with CPECC in the delivery of low and medium voltage cables as well as instrumentation and control cables for the entirety of CPECC’s EPC responsibilities.

With the UAE keen to offset its reliance on oil terminals in the Arabian Gulf and eliminate risks associated with the strait of Hormuz, the ADCOP project is being put on the fast track with local companies like Ducab ensuring that capacity and delivery schedules are met on a tight deadline.  Valued at AED 11.7b in total, ADCOP entails a 370 kilometre pipeline between Habshan and Fujairah, allowing project owners International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) to blend crude from various sources in the Middle East at a proposed refinery in Fujairah.

Laith Madi, Manager of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical (OGP) Sector at Ducab, says that the pipeline will include at least six delivery stations spread across the UAE, requiring complex logistical coordination, carrying a load of up to 1.8 million b/d of crude oil once operational.

“Most of the materials Ducab will supply for the ADCOP project will be sourced using resources from our Special Cables Unit in Jebel Ali, which specialized in tailoring products to the OGP industry,” explains Madi.  “For a fast track project of this scope, we knew that it would be crucial to have a quick turnaround for delivery times as well as on-ground expertise for the duration of the plan.  All of us within the Ducab OGP team are extremely proud to be partnering with CPECC and IPIC over the course of this prestigious development, and our involvement in ADIPEC has been a great opportunity to showcase projects like these to a truly global audience.”

Ducab has showed a renewed focus in the OGP sector during 2010 coupled with an expanded manufacturing capacity announced in late 2009.  In the first half of 2010 alone, the company was awarded AED 126m for local OGP contracts, including an AED 75m agreement with Hyundai Engineering & Construction in the development of ADNOC’s Habshan 5 facilities.

“The scope of the ADCOP project has incredible long-term implications for Abu Dhabi, and Ducab has proven time and again their commitment to developing works of such calibre,” says Franz Cerhak, Procurement Executive Manager at CPECC.  “As a package, Ducab’s OGP team can provide us with everything that we need on hand, offering extraordinary value both in terms of quality and price.”

Other Ducab OGP projects include partnerships with Italy’s Saipem & Korea’s SK for the ADCO Bab Gas project and the KOC new booster station BS160, as well as ventures with Spain’s Tecnicas and UK’s Petrofac for the ADCO SAS oil field development.

UAE Nationals get international hands-on experience in Australia

Ducab sponsors high-achievers from across the company in overseas immersion course, part of company’s National Development Program

2128Dubai, August 21 2010: As part of the company’s long-term investment in developing its UAE national workforce, Ducab—the leading manufacturer of power cables in the Middle East—has sponsored a team of six Emirati employees to complete a month-long practices and training course in Perth, Western Australia.  Selected on the basis of their exceptional performance, attitude and commitment, the group was recognized for their demonstrated professionalism with the opportunity to expand their talents at C.Y. O’Connor College of TAFE and at various independent businesses and organizations.

According to Dr. Saeed Mohd Al Barwani, General Manager of HR and IT at Ducab, the six employees were chosen in recognition of their drive to explore leadership roles within the manufacturing sector and their excellent performance while at the company.  After reviewing the program’s applicants, Laila Marafi, Amal Bin Ghelaita, Maryam, Al Naqbi, Fahad Khalifa, Abdulrahman Al Mansoori and Aqeel Al Awady were chosen for this year’s journey.  The Australia trainees work in roles from the shop-floor level through to engineers, representing a diversity of internal departments such as QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety & Environment), Manufacturing, Finance, HR, Metals, Technical and Testing.

The Australia initiative is one of the many sponsorship development initiatives within the company’s National Development Program (NDP), and included a comprehensive curriculum aimed at enhancing technical, business and communication skills of employees.  This included tours of local government, manufacturing and engineering companies around Western Australia, enabling the trainees to gain valuable insight into their chosen industry and use it to promote leadership skills upon their return to the UAE.

Dr. Al Barwani says that Ducab’s commitment to attracting local talent has seen a significant increase in the number of UAE nationals among its staff, hence the creation of training initiatives like those in Western Australia.  Founded in 2008, the NDP had its first international posting in Australia during 2009, boosting career prospects for UAE nationals at both the experienced and student levels.

“This delegation won’t be the only ones who benefit from the secondment as this unique opportunity to learn about overseas practices and ethics has equipped them with knowledge that can be shared with co-workers back home, contributing to the further development of a talented local workforce and leaders of the future” adds Al Barwani.  “We are fortunate to have many self-motivated individuals in our organization, and this is but one of the ways for us to reward such leadership within our team.”

Fostering talent among younger UAE generations is one of the specific goals of the NDP, and has seen Ducab team up with a number of leading academic institutions across the country. The objective is to provide work placement training for UAE nationals from various leading colleges and institutions including UAE University, Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), IAT and VEDC

Andrew Shaw, Managing Director of Ducab receives ‘Superbrands’ award

Dubai, July 26, 2010- Following a year marked by business expansions, Ducab—one of the leading manufacturers of power cables in the Middle East—has been honoured for the second consecutive year by the Superbrands organisation for its marketing and branding excellence.  The honour is a powerful endorsement that recognizes Ducab’s exceptional work in positioning the brand while strengthening business relationships from its UAE headquarters. Ducab has been chosen for second time as a UAE “Superbrand” against stiff competition and as one of the very few recognised industrial brands.

Andrew Shaw, Managing Director of Ducab, says that as one of the leading companies in the UAE’s manufacturing sector, Ducab is very proud to have been recognised & honoured by the local business community and its industry peers.  “Focusing on client relationships coupled with the development of reliable & high quality products has taken us far in the past thirty years,” comments Shaw.  “As a joint venture between the governments of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, our success is a testament to the remarkable achievements that can be realised by mutual cooperation and the visionary leadership of UAE as a whole.”

Ashish Chaturvedy, Marketing Manager at Ducab, says, “Our products are supplied to partners around the world including Middle East, Asia & Africa from a series of UAE factories and business offices.  The company has consistently gained ground over the years, capturing a market share of over 50 per cent in the UAE and with strong ambition to expand within the GCC region over the next few years.”

With two factories in Jebel Ali—one of which is a cable factory and the other a PVC compounding plant—the company also operates two cable manufacturing facilities in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi, and the UAE’s first copper rod casting plant also located in Abu Dhabi.  Looking to the future, Ducab is also preparing to launch a high-voltage cables factory jointly owned by ADWEA & DEWA (known as Ducab HV) which is currently under construction in Dubai and due for completion during 2011.

Ducab awarded AED 126mn in contracts for work on Abu Dhabi gas facility

Agreement marks a significant milestone for Ducab’s OGP division with two contracts for GASCO’s Integrated Gas Development (IGD) Project

Laith Madi

Laith Madi

Dubai, July 17, 2010: Following a series of recent negotiations in Yokohama, Japan, Ducab—one of the leading manufacturers of power & special cables in the Middle East—has announced winning its second contract to work on Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Gas Development (IGD) Project, raising the company’s total order for GASCO’s Habshan 5 project to just over AED 126mn (USD 35mn).

Ducab’s most recent agreement with Japan’s JGC Corporation is valued at AED 51mn (USD 13.8mn) for the supply of custom power cables to the new Habshan 5 Gas Processing Plant.  This follows the signing of a contract recently with Hyundai Engineering & Construction for supporting the utilities and offsite part of the development, a AED 75mn (USD 20.5mn) agreement which could see Ducab supplying up to 70% of the associated facility’s total power cables requirements.

Both of the developments are part of Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Gas Development (IGD) Project, a AED 33.8bn (USD 9.2bn) plan which aims to increase offshore gas production and provide a permanent link between ADNOC’s offshore Umm Shaif field and new onshore processing facilities at Habshan and Ruwais via Das island.

The Habshan 5 Gas Processing Plant will require thousands of kilometres of high-quality cables with special materials that can withstand Habshan’s harsh environment and comply with stringent safety and project requirements.  With approved products by international bodies such as BSI, KEMA, Lloyds and Warrington Fire Research, Ducab has a history of supplying major projects in the OGP sector with niche products.  Previous partnerships with GASCO alone include the OGD III project through US Bechtel and the Ruwais 3rd NGL through Italy’s Snamprogetti, among others.

Laith Madi, Manager of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical (OGP) Sector at Ducab, says that the two recent awards fall into the strategic objective for Ducab to become a dominant cable supplier for OGP projects in the region.  Through some of the top EPC contractors in the world, he added that Ducab is committed to being part of global OGP developments and is actively involved in monitoring major OGP ventures from its UAE headquarters.

“The IGD Project is an extraordinary venture within the Abu Dhabi gas sector that is bringing together many specialized groups on the cutting edge of their trade,” comments Mr. Madi.  “These kinds of projects and the growth of the oil and gas sector in UAE—and the GCC in general—were the motivation for us to launch the Special Cables Unit (SCU) at the end of 2009.  Focusing on a distinct series of products fitted to the demands of the OGP sector, we work with our clients in designing tailor-made cabling solutions while offering a high level of service and attention through a specialized team within Ducab’s OGP division.”

Mr. Madi notes that providing quick and reliable access to cabling products was also one of the client’s chief concerns in selecting a supplier for Habshan 5.  “With two factories in Abu Dhabi and one in Jebel Ali, we have the capacity to fulfil very large and very specific orders within close proximity to UAE sites,” he adds.  “Especially on a project of this magnitude, having immediate access to a resource supply backed up by comprehensive technical services as part of the overall cable solutions package, can make a huge difference in keeping the entire development on schedule.”

The Habshan 5 project follows a series of recent successes in Ducab’s OGP unit including partnerships with Korea’s SK and GS Engineering for the ADCO Bab Gas and Takreer Green Diesel project, Spain’s Tecnicas and UK’s Petrofac for the ADCO SAS oil field development, and the Mega ADCOP Habshan Fujairah pipeline with CPECC.
