Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts prepares for 2017 opening as Downtown Dubai property is signed


4175Plans for a new hotel apartment tower in Downtown Dubai complete one more step towards Dubai’s vision of welcoming 20 million visitors by 2020. The modern skyscraper will become the seventh Dubai property of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, who announced it signed a management and operating agreement with El Housein Limited.

With an enviable location walking distance from Dubai Mall and 1 km from Dubai International Financial Centre, Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Downtown Dubai will offer its guests access to key attractions and important business districts. Dubai International Airport is just 9 km away.

The 246 hotel apartments will be developed with varying sizes, ranging between 36 sqm for studio apartments and 104 sqm for two-bedroom apartments. A speciality restaurant and lobby café will provide a variety of cuisine and guests will also be able to relax at a swimming pool, gymnasium, spa and beauty salon. Several shops and two meeting rooms complete the plans.

“As Dubai continues to develop and Expo 2020 nears, multiple districts with their own feel, geographic importance and accessibility emerge. Downtown Dubai is an area we’ve eyed for a while and I’m delighted that we will be able to add this vibrant and central location to our portfolio,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Chief Operating Officer of Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East and Asia.

He continued by revealing that the property’s main focus will be on providing medium and long-term accommodation. There is a growing market for travellers to Dubai who prefer the comfort and convenience of fully furnished, fully serviced, branded hotel apartments. Of course, the proximity to Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa and associated attractions means we will also be well placed to accommodate GCC families on leisure travellers once it opens in 2017.”

The company’s seventh Dubai property, will be in a new area of the city for Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, namely in Downtown Dubai. Its other six properties are located across Ibn Battuta Mall near Jebel Ali, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Jumeirah Beach on The Walk, Bur Dubai, Deira and in Mamzar near Sharjah.

El Housein Limited,the owning company ofMövenpick Hotel Apartments Downtown Dubai, is also the owner of Mövenpick Hotel Les Berges Du Lac Tunis. Both properties are currently under construction.

Whoaa! Emaar reveals $3 billion downtown Erbil project


4226With news last week of soaring profits — peaking at 50 per cent — Dubai property giant Emaar Properties isn’t resting on its laurels just yet; it has unveiled its new world-class development that is to come up in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, creating 35,000 jobs for locals there in the process.

Spanning 541,000sqm and taking inspiration from the UAE’s iconic Downtown Dubai — which hosts the world’s largest mall, tallest a building and tallest dancing fountains — Downtown Erbil, estimated to cost more than $3 billion, promises to be a fully-integrated, mixed-use facility, offering a hub for both business and entertainment.

Speaking at a Press conference held in Kurdistan’s capital Erbil on Sunday where details of the project were unveiled, Emaar Properties chairman Mohamed Alabbar said money to fund the project would come from remaining capital, bank loans and pre-sales revenue — with Sunday marking the commencement of pre-sales registration for 276 residential apartments to be located in Downtown Erbil. On the sidelines of the event, Alabbar shrugged off comments that it was expensive developments such as these that cause mass inflation, which in turn affects local citizens.

“These are arguments you can throw at any city, but it’s about the overall economic environment of the city… like job creations, government programmes… if they are not in harmony, that’s when problems arise,” he said.

A once war-torn country, Iraq — the Kurdistan region in particular — is now one of the fastest-growing economies in the Middle East, recently recording double-digit growth, and Alabbar says it reminds him of his hometown, Dubai.

“There is a strong sense of optimism and many opportunities here. The people are diverse and ambitious,” he said, adding the project is a symbol of the growing relationship between Emaar and the Kurdistan region.

Speaking to Khaleej Times on whether Emaar were going to capitalise on the “Downtown” brand worldwide, Alabbar referred to Emaar’s Uptown Cairo development.

“That proves we’re not really going with the Downtown brand. But if you do a job right, I don’t care what you call it, people will come. We want to create the heart of a city. This is something very close to our hearts and we will continue developing this hub across other cities in the future,” he said, without revealing any details of upcoming projects.

“Emaar is a confidence builder; we’re not really in the real estate business, we give cities life,” he said.

Also speaking at the unveiling was the region’s Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, who said the new development will not only be a source of pride for the country’s people, but also a source of income, with 35,000 jobs to be created as a result of the project.

“As a country that has witnessed destruction, there is nothing better for me than to talk about building homes for our people,” he said, making reference to the similarities between Dubai and Kurdistan.

“One day, we hope to be a world leader in infrastructure like Dubai.”

First photovoltaic solar system installed in Msheireb Downtown Doha


4The first photovoltaic solar panels have been installed in the first phase of the QR20bn Msheireb Downtown Doha project by Innovations Unlimited ME.

The installation of the solar panels reflects Msheireb Properties’ ongoing commitment to sustainable development in line with Qatar’s National Vision for 2030.

The roof-mounted photovoltaic modules will supply a portion of the electricity needs of the buildings within Phase 1 of the landmark development.

The buildings within phase 1Aare being installed with 2,072photovoltaic panels and 37 inverters, feeding a total of 463.4 kWp (kilowatts at peak power) of electricity and will feed directly into the electrical grid of the development, thus significantly reducing the buildings’ carbon emissions.

Photovoltaic solar panels use sunlight to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect -the creation of an electric current within certain materials when those materials are exposed to light. Solar panels are designed to capture this electricity so it can be harnessed.

Eng. Abdulla Hassan Al-Mehshadi,Chief Executive Officer at Msheireb Properties said “Adopting advanced clean technology such as solar energy in addition to traditional methods of climate management is a hallmark of the Msheireb project which will have one of the largest concentrations of LEED-certified buildings in the world on completion. Our partnership with Innovations Unlimited ME to install advanced solar power within Phase 1 of the development will help us move steadily towards achieving this goal.”

When MDD is complete, the project will comprise 5,200solar panels across a total of 8,400 square metersof onsite energy production in the form of both electricity and hot water.

Each year, the solar PV system will reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 568 metric tonnes which is equivalent to 241,000 liters of gasoline consumed.

Development of MDD, the world’s first sustainable regeneration of a downtown area in a major city is progressing well with infrastructure works now completed. Construction of the National Archive and the Heritage Quarter is on track to be completed this year.

Innovations Unlimited ME was established in 2009 and has its headquarters in Doha, with a branch office in Bahrain. The company provides innovative renewable energy products and services for both small and large scale projects.

The company’s portfolio includes photovoltaic solutions, solar thermal water heating, solar cooling, building-integrated photovoltaic, solar street lights and wind energy solutions.

Emaar Malls Group, the shopping malls and leisure subsidiary of Emaar Properties, has introduced air-conditioned Trolley Buses, each with a capacity of 25 passengers to enhance the ease of access for visitors to Downtown Dubai.

The 500-acre mega development in the heart of Dubai features several must-visit tourist attractions including Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building; The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination and The Dubai Fountain, the world’s tallest performing fountain.
