Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone Honours 10 Outstanding Companies at 1st Annual Business Excellence Awards

4109Ten companies that have demonstrated the best business practices, the strongest growth, the most innovation, the most outstanding corporate social responsibility and other exceptional qualities were honoured during Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone’s (RAK FTZ’s) first annual Business Excellence Awards programme. An external judging panel from International Performance Excellence (IPE) selected the winners from over 120 entries for RAK FTZ, the investment home of more than 8,000 companies.

“We congratulate all the winners of the RAK FTZ Business Excellence Awards for their innovation, vision, determination and growth,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmad Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of RAK FTZ. “They deserve this recognition for the significant contributions they have made not only to the economic development of Ras Al Khaimah, but also to the community in which they do business.”

The awards were presented during a prestigious gala dinner on 15 January at the Rixos Bab Al Bahr hotel. Members of the RAK FTZ Board of Directors and RAK FTZ CEO Peter Fort also attended.

HH Sheikh Ahmad continued: “Honouring our most outstanding business partners for their success not only highlights what makes these companies stand apart from the crowd, but also showcases the many ways in which the free zone has enabled their success: with lower costs, high-quality business set-up support, and top-notch facilities. The winners are as follows:

Burkert-Contromatic AG International Middle East, a fluid control system company, is the winner of the Best New Technology award, highlighting an organisation that has identified new products or services related to technology, and has successfully brought them to market.

J & R Business Consultancy, a business consultancy and training company, is the winner of the Best Small to Medium Size Business Award, recognising an organisation that provides an exceptional product or service.

Biri Industries, a leading manufacturer and supplier of pipes and hoses for home, agriculture, oil and gas, marine and industrial uses, is the Fastest Growing Company. This award honours an organisation that has shown outstanding growth within two to three years from its start-up date.

Eurocap, which manufactures injection-moulded plastic packaging items, specialising in caps and lids for perfume and cosmetic products, is the Best Contributor to Ras Al Khaimah Development. The award recognises the company that has made the most significant contribution to the emirate’s economic and social development.

Milly Pack, a packing and packaging materials manufacturing company, is the winner of the Best Start-Up award, which honours an organisation that has been trading for less than three years and has demonstrated innovative business ideas.

Utico, the largest full-service private utility in the Middle East, won the Best Corporate Social Responsibility award, recognising a company that has demonstrated responsible business practices in favour of the environment and the community.

Special awards were also given to the following companies for their achievements and dedication to RAK FTZ.

Intertrad, which exports and imports tea, spices, food commodities, synthetic rubber, wool and tiles; and RamJet Aviation Support, which has provided high-quality services for the aviation market since its establishment at RAK FTZ in 2007, were recognised with the Pioneer Award, for the companies that have been with the free zone the longest.

TCA International and Zaher Kayyali Trading were recognised with the Referral Champion of the Year Award, for companies that have made the most referrals to the free zone.

The awards programme was supported by one of the most rigorous assessment processes based on the EFQM Excellence Model. An independent committee chose the nominees and winners through a comprehensive analysis of submissions from the competing organisations.

Judges for the awards came from International Performance Excellence (IPE), an independent company that promotes quality in business around the globe. Some of IPE’s other clients include Etihad Airways, the UAE Ministry of Health, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police, and the Abu Dhabi Education Council, among others.

415Triple celebration for Audi in recent awards ceremonies. Best Plug-in hybrid has been awarded for both Audi production vehicles and concept vehicles at the eCar awards, the new TT has been awarded the Design Innovation of the year at the Automotive Brand Contest and the brand with the four rings also took first place with the RS6 Avant and the S1, at the sport auto awards.

eCar Awards: two wins for Audi

Audi’s plug-in hybrid strategy is scoring points. At the eCar Awards by Auto Bild and Auto Test magazines, Audi took first place with its A3 Sportback e-tron and the TT offroad concept car. The Audi A3 Sportback e-tron was the winner in the “Best Plug-In Hybrid – Production Vehicles” category. The Audi TT offroad concept took the honors in the category of “Best Plug-In Hybrid – Concept Vehicles.” Audi introduced this show car at the Beijing International Automobile Exhibition in April. New Audi TT: Design Innovation of the Year

Audi cleaned up at this year’s Automotive Brand Contest: The new Audi TT was crowned Innovation of the Year. The Matrix LED headlights in the Audi A8 won the title of “Best of Best.” The Automotive Brand Contest is an international design competition for automotive brands. It is presented by the German Design Council. Audi was also honored here for the Audi A3 Sedan, the Audi allroad shooting brake and the “Luft” designer armchair developed by Audi designers in partnership withWalter de Silva and the furniture makers at Poltrona Frau. First place for Audi at the sport auto Awards

Audi was showered with honors at this year’s sport auto Awards: The Audi RS 6 Avant took first place in the “Sedans/Station Wagons Over 100,000 euros” category. The Audi S1 topped the list in the “Small Car” category. The Audi TTS 2.0 TFSI* finished the race in second place in the “Coupés up to 50,000 euros” category. In the “Sedans/Station Wagons up to 50,000 euros” category, the Audi S3 Sedan also took second place. The RS 4 Avant drove into third place in the “Sedans/Station Wagons up to 100,000 euros” category. A total of 15,551 sport auto magazine readers participated in the vote. (September 10, 2014)

Sharek.org wins at the Arabia CSR Awards

413Sharek.org, the Middle East’s first corporate volunteering website, has been awarded a special recognition prize at the Arabia CSR Awards. The award is a recognition of the efforts made by the founders of Sharek to support corporate volunteering in Egypt and raise awareness of how collaboration between the public and private sectors can benefit the country’s civil society.

Sharek allows civil society organizations (CSOs) or start-ups to post volunteer opportunities on the platform for corporate employees to choose from a wide range of options that match their respective interests and skills, be it teaching and translating to finance and technology-related projects. To facilitate this, CSOs and start-ups specify the skills, time frame and number of the volunteers needed and the employees get to search according to the expertise category, date and time that suits them best.

“Sharek is an example of what can be done to benefit society through partnerships that leverage on the skils and abilities of the private sector,” said Shereen Mady, Project Manager, Sharek.org. “Sharek is the first corporate volunteering site in the region, and the response we’ve had from both corporates who wish to partner with Sharek and civil society organizations who are looking to leverage off the skills and experiences of our volunteers has been remarkable. Programs like Sharek can result in a real change in societies across the Middle East region.”

Sharek was spearheaded by three private sector companies known for their pioneering approach to corporate social responsibility, Procter & Gamble, PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM, with social platform designers Social Fruits. The project, which was begun over three years back, was launched in May of this year.

Sharek has also been supported by business associations including the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, the Egyptian Businessmen’s Association and the Egyptian Junior Business Association, and both national and international organizations such as United Nations Volunteers, the United Nations Development Programme, the Egyptian Corporate Responsibility Center and the Industrial Modernization Center. Sharek is incubated by Nahdet El Mahrousa, a Cairo-based non-governmental organization that is focused on social entrepreneurship.

The Arabia CSR Awards aim to highlight CSR best practices and showcase the achievements of public and private companies in enhancing their sustainability performance to have a larger and more positive impact on society.

Red Sea Mall takes home 3 RECon awards

4142The International Council of Shopping Centers and the Middle East Council of Shopping Centers have awarded the famous Red Sea Mall three awards in the RECon 2014 held in Dubai. Such an achievement is a new addition to the awards-rich success record of the Mall in the shopping and entertainment industry across the kingdom, the region and the world.

This achievement was in timely with the 20th anniversary of the foundation of RECon Middle East. The first award was the ICSC Golden Award for Sales Promotion and Events 2014. The second was the ICSC Silver Award for New Media 2014 for the 360 campaign included Facebook and twitter promotions, as well as in-center events. The third award was presented by the ICSC in recognition for the Red Sea Mall charitable campaign “Iftar Al Khair” that was organized during the previous holy month of Ramadan.

On this occasion, Mr. Mohammad Alawi, the CEO of Red Sea Markets Co. the owner and operator of Red Sea Mall, has stated: “The Saudi Companies are dedicated and keen to leave great impression in the international events and summits. 4115The Bahrain based leading Islamic banking group Al Baraka Banking Group B.S.C. (ABG) and five of its subsidiary banking units received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution” Award of 2014, as part of the annual awards that the Global Finance magazine, which is specialized in banking and finance, awards to international banks and financial institutions. Al Baraka Banking Group received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution in Middle East / North Africa” Award, Al Baraka Bank Lebanon received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution in Lebanon” Award, Jordan Islamic Bank received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution in Jordan” Award as well as ”Best Islamic Retail Bank in Jordan” Award, Al Baraka Bank Limited received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution in South Africa” Award, Al Baraka Islamic Bank Bahrain received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution in Bahrain” Award and Banque Al Baraka D’Algerie received the “Best Islamic Financial Institution in Algeria” Award.

The winning of these awards by ABG and its five subsidiary banking units was announced in a final result statement by the magazine’s Award Committee, which included in its membership, a number of economists and editors of Global Finance, international financial advisors and a number of bank managers and experts in the field of banking. ABG and its five banking units received these awards for their prominent role in the Islamic banking sector, their ability to achieve consistent growth in the future and meeting professional standards in terms of the quality of products and services offered to clients, as well as for their originality and innovation in services and customer service, continued development and innovation in banking operations and other important criteria such as strategic relationships, geographic reach, profitability and robustness of financial position.

The awards were received by Mr. Adnan Ahmed Yousif, Board Member and President & Chief Executive of Al Baraka Banking Group on behalf of the wining Group’s units in a ceremony held in Washington at the same time as the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank and was attended by large audience of regional and international officials and banking leaders.

On this occasion, Mr. Yousif said: “We are very happy with the achievement of ABG and five of our banking units in winning this international award, which reflects the leading status that ABG enjoys after successful career filled with achievements over the last ten years from one side and the excellent banking position that these units occupy in their countries, their distinguished performance and services, and good reputation in the Islamic banking sector locally, regionally and globally from the other side”.

He added “The subsidiary banking units of our Group, through their long history in countries where they operate, have come to be amongst the leading financial institutions in servicing their communities and are most established in terms of their expertise and knowledge of the local markets, which reflect the success of Al Baraka Banking Group’s vision and strategy which are based on enhancing the positions of subsidiary units, strengthening their capital resources and creating strong business relationships between the units, as well as coordinating the business policies and the management of risks and operations and other factors, which create strong and consolidated group”.

ENOC awards 5-year staff transportation contract of AED 50 million to Emirates Transport

459Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) has awarded a five-year staff transportation contract valued at AED 50 million to Emirates Transport Company, a UAE Government entity focused on providing the best-in-class transport services.

Emirates Transport has been meeting the staff transportation needs of ENOC’s Group of Companies including the ENOC Retail network for the past seven years.

Saeed Khoory, Chief Executive Officer of ENOC, signed the agreement with Mohamed Abdullah Al Jarmen, General Manager of Emirates Transport, at a ceremony held at the ENOC Headquarters in Dubai.

Saeed Khoory said: “Extending our partnership with Emirates Transport underlines our commitment to maintain and strengthen our relations with our long-term partners. This will bring greater value to our association through its seamless operational support to meet the requirements of our staff and operations.

“We are committed to offering the best in facilities to enhance the comfort and promote productivity of our employees. The strategic agreement also reflects of the vision of the Government of Dubai to foster stronger partnerships between governmental entities to provide high quality services to residents.”

Abdulsalam Al Hammadi, Director of Procurement & Contracts of ENOC, said: “ENOC’s long-term relationship with Emirates Transport is a strategic partnership. It can be further strengthened by supporting each other in areas of mutual interest and business diversification. Emirates Transport uses the ENOC Retail network for fueling their vehicles, while ENOC has renewed the contract for staff transportation.”

Emirates Transport offers a daily fleet of 80 vehicles which undertake about 500 services daily to commute over 4,000 employees of ENOC across its different businesses. More than 3,800 employees of ENOC Retail network, who work at the ENOC service stations and ZOOM stores are also transported in different shifts by Emirates Transport buses.

On average, Emirates Transport undertakes over 175,000 trips to meet the requirements of ENOC’s various business units which function throughout the year without breaks. ENOC is one of the largest partners of Emirates Transport and the company relies on the services of the company for transporting its employees in other emirates including in Fujairah.

Gulf Related Awards SAR 487 million Construction Contract for a Residential Compound in Saudi Arabia to Drake & Scull Construction

4146Gulf Related, a leading regional real estate developer, today announced that it has awarded the main construction contract of its signature residential project in Saudi Arabia, Antara, to Drake & Scull Construction (DSC), the general contracting division of Drake & Scull International (PJSC) (DSI) for SAR 487million (AED 490 million). Construction will be completed in 24 months from the awarding of the contract. Gulf Related is the development manager of Antara.

Dr. Karim El Solh, co-Managing Partner of Gulf Related, said: “Antara will be another world-class development from Gulf Related, combining luxury living with resort style family comfort for expatriates in the new heart of Riyadh. We are delighted to award the construction of this mega development to Drake & Scull Construction, which has established its credentials in the Saudi market, and we look forward to delivering an iconic landmark on Riyadh’s urban landscape. The launch of the Antara residential compound should generate an attractive rental income and a significant long term cash yield for Gulf Related.”

Antara was masterplanned by OTAK and world-renowned EDSA, out of Ft. Lauderdale with offices in Abu Dhabi, which also designed the landscape architecture. The building architecture and engineering was designed by Omrania & Associates out of their Riyadh and Bahrain offices.

Designed in a Mediterranean- resort village style, Antara comprises a built-up area (BUA) of 98,115 square metres, consisting of 520 homes. These include 12 apartment buildings with a total of 267 apartments, 70 duplexes, 151 villas as well as 32 short stay apartments in the Village center. Full community amenities will also be provided in the 157,300 square meters development, featuring a pre-school, village market, main clubhouse, and administrative building with sports and fitness centre; tennis, basketball and volleyball courts; bowling, billiards and barber shops; library, book stores, restaurants, cafes and community lounges.

Other infrastructure facilities will consist of utility building, security gates and guardhouses, car parking, landscaping, and pedestrian paths, with 40% of the total development, or about 48,500 square meters committed to open areas, lush green landscaping, cycling tracks and children’s play areas. Enabling and underground infrastructure works have already been completed.

Under the terms of the agreement, mobilisation will begin immediately and the construction will start on site in one month. DSC will complete all the Civil, Architectural, and MEP works, including Structural, and External Works for the residential and ancillary buildings on the project site.

Drake & Scull has secured AED 5.1 Billion worth of Project Awards year to date. It is currently in several high profile projects in Saudi Arabia, including the AED 3 Billion KAPSARC project, the AED 1.7 billion contract for construction and MEP works for the Lamar Towers in Jeddah, the AED 1.3 billion Jabal Omar Development in Mecca, and the AED 321 million MEP works for King Saud University in Riyadh. Within the healthcare sector, the company is undertaking the MEP works on the AED 255 million National Institute of Neurosciences, and the Cancer & Cardiac Centres in the King Fahd Medical City, Riyadh and the MEP works for the AED 170 million 400-bed hospital in Dammam.

The airline was awarded Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline – Business Class and Indian Ocean’s Leading Cabin Crew.
