Pearson launches ‘Fundamentals of Interactive Arabic Teaching’ course for Arab world

Pearson launches ‘Fundamentals of Interactive Arabic Teaching’ course for Arab world

Customised course developed with Dubai College to improve teaching skills of teachers of second language learners

2257Dubai, UAE, 20th May, 2012: Pearson, the world’s leading education company, has launched the ‘Fundamentals of Interactive Arabic Teaching’ (FIAT) course.

The two day course, developed by Pearson’s International Professional Development team, in close consultation with Pearson’s local trainer and Dubai College, has been designed to improve the skills of teachers of Arabic, and ultimately enhance the learning experience of their students.

Amanda Collins, Pearson’s Teacher Education Director of the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean said: “We are committed to raising standards in teaching in the Arab world. Effective teachers have the power to make a lasting, tangible difference to students’ learning experiences. This new course is designed to enhance the professional development of Arabic teachers, helping them acquire, improve and master skills that contribute to their effectiveness and that ultimately impact the success of second language Arabic learners in the region.”

Pearson has been consulting with educational institutions throughout the Gulf and wider Arab region to determine exactly what clients want when it comes to teacher training. Customers have consistently said that they require a high quality, comprehensive program adapted to the individual needs of their teachers.

Customers have noted some of the programs on offer are too basic and don’t always deliver the content in Arabic. Pearson has set about to redress these issues by offering this new course which encompasses the very latest international teaching techniques but which is also delivered by native Arabic speakers who fully appreciate the challenges these teachers face.

Research has shown that students can progress up to three times faster than their peers when placed with a high performing teacher. An investment in the professional development of teachers therefore has the potential to not only positively impact the lives of thousands of students, but to raise the standard of education at a country wide level.

Course participants are encouraged to identify the characteristics of effective language teachers through shared discussion of their own experiences in the classroom. There is also an emphasis on identifying successful elements of interactive language teaching and learning.

Amanda added: “Teachers taking the FIAT course will learn more about learning styles and will explore effective instructional approaches and activities to cater to a variety of learning styles in the Arabic classroom. They will go home with proven expertise in teaching and learning combined with a wealth of practical resources and knowledge.”

The recently launched course is part of Pearson’s commitment to deliver custom-made learning resources that drive the continuous professional development of teachers in the Arab region, and around the world.

In addition to FIAT, Pearson is developing a wide range of teaching courses in Arabic aimed at improving the skills of Arab teachers so they can offer their students more engaged and rewarding learning.

The most recent course is “Early Childhood Development”, a 30 hour program that can be delivered in either English or Arabic, aimed specifically at those working with young learners.

Peter Hill, Headmaster, Dubai College, said: “There is a growing focus in the UAE on improving the teaching of Arabic in schools. In response to this drive, our college contacted Pearson to assist in arranging a high quality course based on modern approaches. Through intensive dialogue with Pearson the course was customised to our needs.”

Sawsan Abdulhadi, Head of Arabic, Dubai College added: “What was unique about this course was the fact that it was delivered in Arabic.  This made teachers of Arabic understand course content really well and justify their points of view. The course covered a wide range of topics related to the most modern methods of interactive teaching of Arabic. A discussion followed every session to debate different themes and discuss various teaching styles. The lecturer was well-prepared and equipped with the right materials and leaflets and activities to drill certain points.”

The FIAT course has been soft-launched in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.  Attendees have included teachers from the British International School Abu Dhabi, GEMS American Academy, Dubai English Speaking College, Brighton College, and the British School Al Khubairat. In addition, Aldar Academies has commissioned Pearson to deliver this course for 20 of their Arabic teachers from Al Yasmina School, Abu Dhabi.

The recent launch of the Pearson Teacher Education and Leadership Academy means that these and future Pearson courses will receive prestigious Edexcel accreditation. Edexcel provides an independent, internationally applied quality benchmark, based on five key quality indicators; learner support, resources and environment, quality management system, administrative arrangements and assessment and verification. Edexcel accreditation is a guarantee to customers that they are receiving the most up to date and innovative teaching and learning on offer, anywhere in the world.

Qatar Petroleum’s Medical Services Department marks World Hypertension Day

Qatar Petroleum’s Medical Services Department marks World Hypertension Day

2250Under the patronage and directives of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman and Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum, QP’s Medical Services Department marked the global celebration of World Hypertension Day on Thursday, May 17.

The occasion, which was organised under the guidance of Mr. Ahmad Ali Abdulla Al-Mawlawi, Director for Administration, and Dr. Mahmood Abdul Rahman Al-Jaidah, Manager for Medical Services at QP, included a range of activities intended to further raise awareness about high blood pressure and to educate QP employees on what they could do to effectively manage the disease.

“Marking the observance of World Hypertension Day is part of the full calendar of health promotion programs that we regularly conduct throughout the year to safeguard the health of our employees and their families,” said Dr. Al-Jaidah. “We are confident that the resulting awareness on hypertension and its health effects would go a long way in our continued efforts to address this preventable disease.”

First launched in 2005, World Hypertension Day is an initiative of the World Hypertension League (WHL), a Canada-based organization that was founded in 1984. The WHL is currently made up of 95 member organizations, consisting mainly of hypertension societies from all over the world. For this year’s celebration of World Hypertension Day, the WHL had selected the theme, “Healthy Lifestyle - Healthy Blood Pressure,” to highlight the importance of good health habits in preventing or controlling the disease.

In line with this, among the activities organized last Thursday by QP’s Medical Services Department was a hypertension screening program at the corporation’s Centre for Health & Wellness along C-Ring Road. A large number of QP personnel who were based in Doha participated in the program, and they also attended the health awareness presentations and counselling sessions conducted by the corporation’s medical doctors, pharmacists and dieticians.

In the run up to this year’s World Hypertension Day, the department conducted an intensive information campaign not only to announce the event but also to provide important information about high blood pressure to all QP employees. The information campaign explained what hypertension is all about, how it can affect the body, and how it is diagnosed.

QP’s Medical Services Department also provided tips on the proper way to take a blood pressure reading and on the measures that everyone can do to prevent hypertension. The latter include maintaining an ideal body weight, quitting smoking, being physically active, as well as eating the right diet, such as daily servings of fruits and vegetables and foods that have low sodium content.
