Abu Dhabi - Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 – 2011 was more than just another year for Al Rahba Hospital, as the hospital managed to achieve milestones that covered many aspects. From unit expansions, addition of new sections, introducing cutting edge technologies, launching awareness campaigns, organizing conferences and forums, all the way to increasing the local workforce and offering training programs, Al Rahba Hospital has ended 2011 with an array of activities, events and announcements that positioned the hospital as a leading healthcare facility in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

In terms of expansions and section additions, Al Rahba hospital expanded its ICU and NICU rooms by adding 27 new rooms (10 ICU, 17 NICU), 2 new VIP suites and a specially designed play room for children. In the clinics section, the Ophthalmology clinic was reopened offering the best of medical services and operated by world renowned doctors and a dedicated Cardiology Clinic was inaugurated in response to the rising incidence of heart disease in the UAE.

“In 2011, we have managed to achieve many of our set objectives with regards to the hospital expansion and addition of new clinics,” said Mr. Timothy Dentry, CEO of Al Rahba Hospital. “The ICU and NICU expansion will help us aid more patients and ensure they receive the best quality of healthcare services.”

Within the past year, Al Rahba Hospital has organized a number of initiatives, campaigns and events including the 2nd Women’s Health Conference, the community town hall meeting (Mas’aool Intiative), the child injury prevention campaign, Osteoporosis, Diabetes and breast cancer awareness campaigns. Training programs for the hospital’s staff were also a key highlight of 2011 including the disaster preparedness training program that was held during December to enhance the capacity and capability of Al Rahba employees in a standardized and integrated approach. Moreover, Al Rahba hospital organized its first professional lab day where it highlighted the lab processes and educated the public on one of the most essential phases of medical processes.

“Last year was a phenomenal one for Al Rahba Hospital as we focused our efforts on strengthening our bonds with the society and among our staff,” added Mr. Dentry. “Our awareness campaigns and training programs were widely recognized by the patients, visitors and staff members and created more channels of interaction and opinion exchange. This year, we are planning to increase our outreach programs and highlight many medical issues that can - if prevented- save many lives.”

Al Rahba hospital was also present in many of the yearly occasions such as the UAE’s 40th National day, Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, Hijri New Year and many other celebrations. The events that took place gathered more than 5000 patients collectively and indicated the tireless efforts of the hospital staff to interact with the society and get closer to the patients and visitors on a more personal level.

The hospital was also part in the nationwide campaign to increase national workforce, and in line with this campaign and SEHA’s initiative, “Intilaqa”, Al Rahba hospital increased its national workforce by 30 employees in the last quarter of 2011 and offered management and medical training programs that contributed effectively to increasing the expertise and skills of those employees.

“During this year, our focus will be more on increasing national workforce by recruiting and training locals in various hospital departments,” added Mr. Dentry. “2012 promises to be a year of success and prosperity and we are confident that the management, staff and everyone who works at Al Rahba Hospital will give his/her best to ensure that we offer nothing but the best of medical and healthcare services to the patients of Abu Dhabi.”

Abu Dhabi’s Al Rahba Hospital is owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company PJSC (SEHA) and managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International.

The recognition attests to SEHA’s commitment to improve its quality management system by implementing the ESQR Quality Performance Model.

The award selection process was based not on self-nomination but rather a recommendation process lead a group of specialists and managers appointed by the European Awards Committee, who consulted with embassies and public sector bodies to nominate suitable candidates

The ceremony was held in Brussels, Belgium, and was attended by Sulaiman Hamid Almazroui, Ambassador of the UAE to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, Head of Mission to the European Union. Renowned business leaders from different countries, academic experts and quality professionals participated in the convention.
“Patients deserve the best possible care, but they also deserve the best possible experience”, says Diederik Zeven - General Manager of Philips Healthcare Middle East & Turkey.

“At Philips, we simplify healthcare by combining our unique clinical expertise with insights into how patients and clinicians experience healthcare. In response, we develop more intuitive, and in the end better technology solutions to help take some of the complexity out of healthcare, and reduce the burden. This helps to drive better diagnosis, more appropriate treatment planning, faster patient recovery and long term health,” he adds.

During the show, Philips highlighted technologies that focus specifically on the patient, in addition to advanced networking tools that facilitate greater collaboration between radiologists and referring physicians.

Clinical collaboration to drive innovation and efficiency in radiology
The Imaging 2.0 concept is poised to address a dilemma that exists in healthcare today: more consumers are demanding quality healthcare, yet there is less money to treat them. Based on feedback from clinicians, Philips’ approach to this dilemma is to enable enhanced and smarter collaboration through advanced technology with the intention of better patient outcomes and lower costs for the healthcare system.

The driving force is to create a healing environment in which multiple modalities integrate caregivers into a consolidated workflow. This integration leads to less cost and greater efficiency. It marks a new world of collaboration, which can be seen in hybrid labs, combining modalities such as x-ray, ultrasound, PET and MR.

Women’s Health

No two women are alike, and neither are their cancers. Philips understands that breast cancer is a different experience for every woman it touches. Studies and guidelines suggest a multimodality approach for comprehensive screening, diagnosis and management. Philips offers a complete solution including mammography, ultrasound, MRI, and PET/CT supported by leading-edge information management.

For more than forty years, mammography has been the most common screening tool used for the early detection of breast cancer. Philips is showcasing the next generation of digital mammography - MicroDose Mammography. According to clinical reports, Philips MicroDose uses a substantially lower average X-ray dose than other full-field digital mammography systems, In fact, it allows for a reduction in radiation dose by up to 50%.

Innovation in Emergency Care

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.3 Without immediate treatment, the majority of SCA victims will die, with the chances of survival reducing by up to 12% with every minute that passes. 4,5 Defibrillation is recognized as the only definitive treatment for the abnormal heart rhythm, which is most often associated with SCA.

During the show, Philips demonstrated their continued commitment to innovation in this area with the introduction of the HeartStart FR3 in this region, raising the bar for Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) by addressing the evolving needs of professional responders, so they can respond to patients swiftly and with confidence. Recognizing that time-to-therapy matters, the Defibrillator is designed to help professional responders make lifesaving faster, easier, and better.

From pregnancy to labor, hospital to home
Maternal and neonatal health care faces longstanding challenges. Neonatal mortality comprises nearly 60% of infant deaths, and nearly 40% of deaths in children under-five years of age.

Philips recognizes the profound importance of caring for new mothers and babies, and is dedicated to keeping them healthy.

From the obstetrician’s office to the hospital to the home, Philips Mother & Child Care provides simple, reliable health care solutions for parents and clinicians.

Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and Oasis Hospital are among the headline exhibitors at the career fair currently taking place at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre until tomorrow (2 February) to fill an unlimited number of positions with Emirati candidates.

As the regulatory body that shapes the framework for the health system in Abu Dhabi, HAAD is a regular recruiter at Tawdheef, and returns in its efforts to continue encouraging Emiratis to consider careers in healthcare, at a time when 6.5 per cent of the 22,000 registered healthcare professionals in Abu Dhabi consist of Emiratis.

“Tawdheef provides hospitals and healthcare providers an excellent opportunity to reach out to key stakeholders in the drive for Emiratisation,” said Shaikha Alzaheray, Manager of Emiratisation of the healthcare department, HAAD.

“There are a large number of positions available in healthcare for UAE nationals as well as the appropriate training programmes to help them pursue a successful career. It is very important for Emiratis to support our mission to transform the healthcare landscape in Abu Dhabi, and we are continuously looking to recruit the right candidates to realise this vision.”

Oasis Hospital, the oldest hospital in Abu Dhabi and birthplace of the leaders of the UAE, is also using Tawdheef to recruit as many UAE Nationals as possible as it expands its facility in Al Ain and increases its capacity to serve the region.

“We continue to invest in Emirati talent and will always do so in the future as a way to holistically contribute to the Al Ain region and the UAE,” said David Printy, CEO of Oasis Hospital. “The popularity of healthcare as a career choice for UAE Nationals is growing, and Tawdheef is a great opportunity for us to increase our percentage of Emiratis in our workforce.”

The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company SEHA, which manages the curative activities of public hospitals and health clinics in Abu Dhabi, is also a silver sponsor at Tawdheef.

Presented by Abu Dhabi Tawteen Council and supported by the Emirates National Development Programme, Tawdheef is the UAE’s leading recruitment event that supports Emiratisation. Only companies with immediately available positions for UAE Nationals are taking part.

These include platinum sponsors the UAE Presidential Guard, Abu Dhabi Police, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and National Bank of Abu Dhabi, gold sponsors Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, ADNOC and Etisalat, and silver sponsors Etihad Airways, the Telecoms Regulations Authority (TRA) Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), and Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company (ADNIC). Abu Dhabi Airports Company is the registration sponsor.

The sight of unwanted hair on the legs, face, back, or anywhere else on the body would have led to some embarrassing moments.

A lot has been read and written about ways to do away with unwanted hair. As technology takes center stage, all the older methods of depilation – tweeze, shave, waxing, threading, bleaching, depilatory creams, electrolysis have been rendered obsolete. But each of these come with the flipside, in-growths, recurring hair, unsmooth skin, nicks and cuts, and most importantly pain.

Now, it is time to say goodbye temporary depilatory solutions as well as PAIN. With Kaya Skin Clinic, the largest skin care chain in the Middle East, launching an innovative and revolutionary Painless Laser hair reduction technology, a state-of-the-art next generation laser hair reduction system that makes hair removal a happier and painless way to smooth hair-free skin.

The Kaya Painless Laser is not only an effective option to conventional hair removal techniques but also gets rid of unwanted body hair permanently without hurting! What makes this whole process so user-friendly is that prior to the service being administered, Kaya’s expert dermatologists evaluate the skin and recommend a customized programme keeping the skin and hair type in mind.

The dermatologist conducts a Patch Test on the selected area chosen to undergo laser hair reduction, to check the skin sensitivity to laser.

Using an innovative ‘IN-MOTION’ technology, one of the most advanced laser hair reduction options available till date across the world, the painless laser keeps the skin cool as low laser heat is subjected to a larger area that acts repeatedly on hair follicles without damaging the skin and more importantly without any pain and as effective as any other laser technology

The new FDA-approved laser technique is customized for every skin and hair type, and is quick and comfortable without any side-effects – an epitome of Kaya’s ethical and professional understanding approach to individual problems and concerns.

Ms. Hiba, a client who took the new Kaya Painless Laser, is all praise for the service. “I tried the Painless laser hair reduction service at Kaya Skin Clinic. Initially, I was a little nervous about how it would feel. I tend to believe in the no pain no gain theory, and was worried the results won’t be as good also. I am on my 2nd session and it is amazing to see the dramatic results so quickly. But I was also surprised at how comfortable it was to have it done. I did not realize anything while getting the laser done. This really does work; all gain and absolutely no pain!”

Elaborating on the technique, Kaya’s Specialist Dermatologist Dr. Mohamad Dallah said: “Hair follicles grow and re-grow in a cycle; and only the hair currently in a growth stage are affected in a particular session of the laser hair removal. Hence, multiple sessions are recommended. The frequency depends on different factors including hair type, skin type and body part targeted. The needs for each individual are different and for that reason we can invite prospective clients to book a consultation in order to assess any problems you may have worries about and for us to give an honest appraisal of the treatment requirements.”

Most customers need about six sessions each with a gap of 4-6 weeks and the whole experience is as soothing as a hot stone massage. There is no skin irritation, no discoloration, no inflammation as seen with other hair removal methods so no downtime is required!

All services at Kaya Skin Clinic are approved by US FDA, which conform to the highest international quality standards and suited for all skin types, in line with its vision to deliver world-class hygiene and skincare services. Its advisory panel conducts highly advanced skin treatments, besides hair free, anti-aging and hair care solutions and has catered to over 65,000 satisfied customers till date.

So what are you waiting for? To get a first-hand experience of the latest in laser hair reduction, book an appointment for a free laser patch test with the Kaya team of expert dermatologists.

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is at the forefront of the latest advances in healthcare following its participation in an innovative procedure to treat blocked coronary arteries. The new therapy, which was undertaken for the first time at Dubai Hospital and Rashid Hospital last week, is deemed so groundbreaking that it has been hailed the ‘Fourth Revolution’ in the field of cardiology.

The DHA is the first health entity in the Middle East and Africa to offer the new therapy, putting the DHA firmly on the map for breakthrough advances in healthcare.

The new therapy that was performed is titled ‘ABSORB’ and involves the insertion of a bioresorbable scaffold into an affected coronary artery to keep it open and thereby promote the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. The procedure is similar to the existing technique that places a ’stent’ into a diseased artery, but with one crucial difference. Whereas the stent is a permanent fixture that remains in the blood vessel, making the vessel similar to a cage, the scaffold progressively dissolves over a period of two years, leaving the artery widened but with no trace of the device left.

“The DHA is very pleased to be able to participate in the ABSORB program, which promises to revolutionise the treatment of coronary artery disease over the coming years,” said His Excellency Khalid Al Sheikh Mubarak, Deputy Director-General at the DHA.

“The first ever ABSORB procedure for the Middle East and Africa was successfully undertaken at Dubai and Rashid Hospital and this auspicious event heralds the start of a new chapter in the treatment of heart disease in the region. Thanks to the foresight of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, who is determined to reduce the social and economic burden of heart disease in the UAE, the DHA is now playing a leading role in new forms of treatment for this condition, which is currently the number one cause of death in the country,” he added.

The first ever insertion of an Abbott ABSORB scaffold device in the Middle East and Africa took place at Dubai Hospital’s Heart Center and was performed by Dr. Talib K. Majwal, Consultant, Interventional Cardiology & Director of Interventional Cardiology, Dubai Heart Center, Dubai Hospital and Dr. Fahad Baslaib, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Director of Rashid Hospital’s Cardiology Department. The procedure took about twenty minutes, with the patient remaining conscious throughout.

“In terms of insertion technique, the ABSORB scaffold procedure is much the same as placing a stent in an affected artery, so there was no need to learn a major new set of skills for this new treatment paradigm,” said Dr. Majwal.

“Although the insertion technique is the same, the huge advantage that this scaffold has over a stent is that over a period of two years it dissolves into harmless gas and water, leaving the coronary artery free of any foreign object. This allows the artery to flex and pulsate, which is better for blood flow than having a restrictive permanent stent that turns the vessel into an inflexible cage and inhibits artery movement,” he added.

The term ‘Fourth Revolution’ that has been applied to the ABSORB scaffold procedure follows its recognition as a groundbreaking form of treatment for coronary artery disease. It is the latest development that has seen a linear progression from the ‘First Revolution,’ which was coronary angioplasty using a balloon to widen the affected artery, the ‘Second Revolution,’ which was the use of a permanent metal stent to unblock an artery and the ‘Third Revolution,’ which incorporated drugs built into a stent to be gradually released over time.

“The ABSORB bioresorbable scaffold offers numerous benefits over metal stents, so it can be considered as a whole new treatment paradigm in its own right,” said Dr. Fahad Baslaib.

“The ABSORB procedure is particularly beneficial for younger patients, as there is the option for further forms of treatment in the future - something that the insertion of a metal stent precludes. This is especially significant for the UAE, as the average age that people start to experience heart problems here is 45 years of age, which is 10 to 15 years younger than in Europe,” he added.

This is in connection with the Group’s recent contribution to the Society’s operations as part of its CSR plans for 2011.

Established in 1989, Bait Al Khair Society raises funds and organizes programs for uplifting the disadvantaged sections of UAE society. Widows, divorcees, low-income nationals, patients, disabled nationals, families of prisoners, nationals with special needs, orphans and students from poor families come into the ambit of the organization. In order to carry out its charitable initiatives, Bait Al Khair Society works in collaboration with public welfare institutions in the UAE.

Bait Al Khair Society has been keen to spread the message of humanitarianism since its establishment, with the support of public and private sectors. This joint initiative between Bait Al Khair and Bin Sina Pharmacy demonstrates the social responsibility of the private sector in the UAE in helping the society.

Dr. Saleema Shurrab, General Manager of BinSina Pharmacy Group in the UAE, said: “It is a pleasure to support local non-profit organizations as part of BinSina Pharmacy Group’s strategy to play a stronger role in raising the quality life in the UAE by lending support to needy people. We encourage private sector companies to be more active in this domain as the private sector is very critical to the success of humanitarian initiatives.”

By supporting humanitarian activities, BinSina Pharmacy seeks to give something back to the society and this has been the top priority of its community outreach programmes for the past five years.

BinSina pharmacy Group, established in 1965, was the first ever licensed pharmacy in Dubai. It began operations with a team of 12 people and currently employs more than 250 employees from 16 nationalities.

As the event welcomed exhibitors and visitors from all over the world, New Zealand showcased its home grown talent of Healthcare sector companies such as: Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, a world-leader in respiratory care; Orion Health, Vensa and Adept Medical Limited, which received strong support from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) – the New Zealand government’s economic development agency.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s Dubai-based Trade Commissioner, Steve Jones, said: “The Gulf’s burgeoning health sector is important to New Zealand and presents considerable regional trade opportunities. The Gulf is embracing New Zealand’s healthcare technologies, especially as the population here in the GCC is expected to double in the next 20 years; alongside growing regional health tourism.”

The GCC population boom has made healthcare improvements a critical challenge for regional governments, along with heavy demand on technology, equipment and infrastructure to support the growth. And with New Zealand’s healthcare sector being well-versed in creating technologies that drive efficiencies and deliver better health outcomes, the country’s size and relatively small, dispersed population have led to pioneering uses of technology and a flexible, highly responsive approach to meeting healthcare requirements.

New Zealand’s expertise is particularly recognised in the area of electronic health records. With patient volumes in the GCC steadily increasing and new facilities being delivered, growing issues such as patient record management provide a solid opportunity for health IT companies.

To help streamline the process New Zealand company Orion Health, the country’s largest health software company, offers a single sign-on clinical surface and a number of workflow solutions that ease access to patient data and analyse trends, thereby reducing errors and streamlining information flow.

“Typically, large healthcare organisations have a broad variety of enterprise and departmental applications, each of which contains its own data and usually has its own security mechanism. The Orion technology makes integration through interoperability simple and effective,” said Ali Zarzour, Orion Health General Manager.

New Zealand also leads the way in heated humidification therapy, guided by Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, one of New Zealand’s leading healthcare experts in the Middle East and North Africa. The company’s respiratory humidifiers and obstructive sleep apnoea devices bring relief to millions of people in this region and over 100 countries worldwide.

“Fisher & Paykel Healthcare has been working in the Middle East for more than 20 years building up a solid base of clients. We recognise that the coming years hold much growth for health technology providers in the region and the Arab Health Expo is a key networking opportunity for us,” said Simon Hall, Area/Corporate Relations Manager of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.

“While New Zealand may be geographically isolated we are a globally connected nation. Our place in the world shapes our perspective and it drives New Zealanders to look outward, seize and realise opportunities and work together to excel in the global economy,” Jones added. “Arab Health is the perfect forum for New Zealand companies to reach out and grow in this region.”
