Abu Dhabi: A new type of surgery at the Corniche Hospital in Abu Dhabi is set to give hope to thousands of UAE women who suffer from incontinence disorders.
The new urogynaecology and reconstructive surgery programme will treat women with serious conditions of the pelvis and lower abdomen and will be available in the new women’s health centre.
It’s led by Dr Denise Howard, an internationally recognised expert in urogynaecology.
“Involuntary leakage of urine, pelvic pressure, vaginal bulge and decreased sensation in intimate physical relations between couples are common signs of urogynaecologic disorders,” said Dr Howard.
These setbacks could result in women being reluctant or unable to participate in social or physical activities, and could be caused by several factors, she said.
“This disorder can develop in some women after childbirth, or following other pelvic stresses such as chronic constipation, pelvic surgery or trauma,” Dr Howard said.
“The problem results from a combination of factors, but childbirth is the primary one, although not all women who have children suffer from these complex pelvic problems.”
The hospital’s plan is to build a team of urogynaecology experts who will deliver the programme. It aims to offer complete diagnostic assessment and all-inclusive integrated care, which ranges from physical therapy, diet and aesthetic gynaecological services to vital surgeries for disorders affecting the female pelvic floor, the doctor said.
“In the case of surgery, there will be many different surgical procedures with their own inherent risks. The treatment plans will be individualised and the risks reviewed in detail with the patient involved,” said Dr Howard. Research in the field of urogynaecology is ongoing.
